I take everything like that in carry on except cords. (cords can be replaced not the items, too expensive. If bags go missing, these items are with us. Clothes can be picked up at Walmart cheap. (actually we take swim suit, shorts and tee with us on plane just "in case" and it has happened!)have not flown in 5 years, and never w/ all the new "toys" LOL
where do you pack your :
- Digital camera
- camcorder
- all the cords that go with above
- GPS are they better off in checked or along with you in carry on?
Last time I flew, I used my classic L.L. Bean backpack as a carry-on. Into the back half went the lap-top, the camera, and all the cables, batteries, chargers, and i-pod accessories etc. The I-pod and the Blackberry were in the purse I kept on my person.
I found it's the easiest to put all the cables into one cosmetic bag and toss that right into the carry-on. It's just easier on my sanity to do it that way.
keep your electronics on you and ask them to inspect them personally. DO NOT let them go through the x-ray thing they have, it could erase all your video tapes and maybe even your digital camera pictures.

The X-Ray machine definitely will NOT erase video tapes and memory cards.
Not to argue but my brother always takes a video camera with him and just three months ago, 2 of the 4 tapes he had were erased and he knew there were things on them because he watched with his in-laws before he flew home.
What else could have done it?
How about pressing the wrong button on the tape machine? User error is the most likely cause but there's no way we could know. Thousands of people go through these machines every day with magnetic media and don't have a problem. The fact that 2 of the taps weren't affected only suggests that the issue isn't with the airport screening since they all went through the machine.
I have a bulk tape eraser left over from the days of reel-to-reel audio tapes. I have tried to erase DV tapes with this, and it has required many passes to even cause a slight problem with the tapes. Due to the high coercivity of the DV tapes, it is hard for me to believe that X-Ray equipment would be able to erase them--in fact, if they created enough of a magnetic field to do it, other metalic objects passing through would be drawn to the sides of the machine!
That said, I have been on 6 trips (12 passes through the machines) with DV tapes, and have never had a problem.
thank you
our Camcorder is digital ( hard drive) so we do not have tapes, so that is not a worry for me.
I may be going come May; my concern would be about my NintendoDS game cartridges and of course my memory card for my dig. camera.... Its been awhile since I've flown (July 2001).
