Where to go for good "color" in Sept?

DH is dreaming about taking a weekend to get away somewhere (I don't think it should or will happen, but I'm humoring his dreaming) in mid to late September. I was wondering what would be some good places to go to see fall color at that time of year, or would we be too late or too early for that? I know the North East would be the best place to go, but that's a little farther than we're able to go for this trip, so we're looking for something a little closer to home. DH is curious about somewhere in Virginia. I was wondering about the Smokeys or Ozarks.

Any suggestions?

RAJAJH, you NEED to visit us in the Northeast;) ;) ;) ;) .......

Eros is right (I can't believe I said that!;) ) You need to come to the N.East..... come to Maine..... then you can see the colors and the Ocean.... there's nothing like fall on the Maine Coast!

Eros, that's the prettiest picture you have ever posted!!!;) :bounce:

Upper Peninsula in Michigan has many color tours!

Thanks, KITTY:) :) :) :) ..........

RAJAH, Maine, New Hampshire,AND Vermont are REALLY gorgeous. However, it does get a little tricky flying in only for a weekend at peak season, which is "around" Columbus Day. Peak foliage varies each year with the change in temperatures, moisture, etc. Of course, the greatest number of flights are into BOSTON, but there are airports as well in the other states.

Wow, that is beautiful. I'd love to go to New England in the fall.

Rajah, you might consider Skyline Drive in Virginia. October is probably the better time to go, but its still lovely in the early fall as well.

Where ever you decide to go Tammi, I might double check and make sure that the leaves will be turned by then. Around here the beginning weeks of October are usually the most colorful (right around Columbus Day). Where ever you decide to go I am sure you will have fun as fall is my favorite season and I just love watching the trees change :)

I'm leaning toward Yellowstone instead of the East for that very reason, Elaine. DH will be at a conference in October, so we wouldn't be able to go at all then. The closest we would get would be the last weekend of September. DH keeps saying he really wants to see Yellowstone, I would like to get back there, that's something we can get just a taste of in two days (not counting travel to and from) and hopefully have a successful "mountain" vacation so DH will go back to mountains with me again...

But, I doubt we'll do anything. It's still fun to wish though :)

My home state of West Virginia is breathtaking in the fall , Rajah. We'd love to have you visit!

EROS, beautiful picture!

I live in the Ozarks and we don't really get our good color until mid-October. September is still just hot and yucky here.

Well, this Florida gal saw her first and only, fall in New England, on my honeymoon, when I got married (the first time) in early October.

We drove through Maine, New Hamshire and Vermont, and everything looked just like EROS's picture! Since I have lived my entire life in Florida, I was in AWE of the splendor of the changing seasons!

The north shore of Minnesota is awesome in Sept, too!

Fly into Duluth and drive up.
