Where's a good counter service place to eat at Hollywood Studios (MGM)? I've read threads here saying the ABC Commisary is not good. What are some good alternatives? Thanks very much!:goodvibes

We like Mama Melrose, Sci Fi and Prime Time for TS. Counter service - nothing really :(

Very sad to hear. We just want CS for lunch (reserving our TS meal that evening for Boma!).

Do people end up leaving the park to eat somewhere else? And if so, where is the next closest area to MGM we can make a quick run to to get something to eat?

Yes, we actually leave the Studios and go to one of the resorts for our counter service meal (this is a good way to avoid the horrible CS's at the Studios and experience the ones at the resorts). If I absolutely had to eat at the Studios, the only place we would eat is Backlot Express.

This is maybe a stupid question.... but which resorts are "easy" or "quick" to get to from the Studios? I like the idea of trying a resort CS, but the thought of how to get to one of them is a bit overwhelming to me. any suggestions you have would be welcome. And thanks!!

We eat at the Backlot Express -- it's ok if you feel like eating what they have on the menu. Quick service and always seats available, too.

Actually, a very good question. What resorts or areas (Downtown Disney) are close by or easy to get to for a quick lunch getaway from the Studios?

Go to 50s Prime Time. Go directly to 50s Prime Time.

This is the one MUST DO TS restaurant for us. We very much enjoy trying different TS restaurants at WDW, but we absolutely LOVE Prime Time. food, atmosphere, everything about it

I would recommend hoping on the boat it's on the right hand side as you are facing the entrance of the studios and get off at the beach/yacht club stop and head to beaches and cream for lunch

Is Beaches & Cream CS or TS?

Also--- how long do you approximate it takes to get there from the Studios?

We always have a rental car...so we don't pay attention to what is "easiest" or "quickest". But you could look at the menus of all of the CS places at resorts and then just hop a bus to that resort and then after eating hop back on the bus back to the Studios or one of the other parks if you are park hopping.

We do not like any of the CS places in HS but we tried Sci Fi for lunch last month and it was awesome! Cannot wait to go back there

We ate at Pizza Planet a little over a week ago and while the choices are limited (pizza and salads), the food was pretty good. If you are in the park and want a CS, I would recommend it.

Another vote for Pizza Planet. We have also eaten at Backlot Express and thought it was fine. Certainly not gourmet, but not as bad as we expected from reading the boards here!!

Beaches and CReam is a TS and they don't take reservations. I've heard it is really good, but that if you don't get there at opening you can expect a long wait.

we ate at pizza planet a few years ago and it was perfectly fine. :) Got a thumbs up from the 2 kids. Myself and the dh thought it was fairly tasty (I may have had a salad too) and my parents actually thought it was perfectly servicable food and they're quite picky.

So, for us, it's a safe CS option.

take a look at Sci fi dine in for lunch time. prices there are quite reasonable IMO. They have one of the best burgers on property. If you need to do a CS we like backlot express. It isn't always open but we also find that the Studio Catering Co next to honey I shunk the kids play area wasn't too bad.

We just got back a couple of hours ago from a week long trip. We ate at Backlot Express--three of us had the chicken nuggets and fries. That was all good. One had the Soutwest Sante Fe Salad and liked it. Comes in a clear plastic bowl 3-4 inches high--like you'd see at a quick mart.

We had Breakfast-just off Main St-on the right, I don't remember the name..Hollywood Rolls or Starring Rolls or something like that. One had a cherry danish, one had a cinnamon bun, and 2 had bagels. Nothing bad there either. Erika-has the cinn bun and proclained it the "best ever" even better than Main St Bakery at Magic Kingdom.

We ate at Prime Time in Sept 08 and loved it. The cast members are all hilarious with their antics and the food is good...comfort foods if you will.

Best of Luck!

You heard right....ABC Commissary is NOT good at all! I recommend either the Backlot Express or Pizza Planet. Both places have good food.
