Where to buy second contract?

DVC gurus - Please help me think this through!

We (2 adults, 2 kids ages 9,12) bought AKV points back in 2014 and have been super efficient using our 125 pts by staying in the value studios majority of time as well as banking/borrowing. As we have been to Disney several times a year now we have realized we completely love our DVC vacations- including our time spent on DHHI.

Problem is- kids are getting older and we won’t be able to squeeze into studios much longer. Ideally we would like to visit DHHI last week of March in a one or two bedroom every year (kids’ Spring Break) and also visit WDW every other year.

So. Where do we buy more points? DHHI Resale? I know two bedrooms aren’t super hard to get end of March currently but we really love the resort and want to be sure we are able to stay there each year. Maintenance fees are high at DHHI- something to think about.

Are we better off buying at Saratoga Springs Resale and saving on maintenance fees plus longer contract life?

Other suggestions?

Very interested to hear feedback too. I was thinking the same thing (minus the kids part)

I think I would buy SSR resort and save on the fees and have a longer contract.

This is tough. It depends on how disappointed you would be if you were unable to get HHI at 7 months. So if going to HHI is the have to get reservation there is only one resort to book. No split stay or other option. So if it is a priority to go to HHI each year the buying HHI to be sure you get it is my recommendation. If your ok not being able to book some years than perhaps SSR could make since but that would mean no DVC vacation that year or a trip to FL. The less flexibility the more I recommend HHI.

As others have said, it really depends on what you are looking for out of the additional points.
Based on your statement that you really want to stay at HHI every year and that same week, your best bet is to buy points there so you can book at 11 months. Booking at 7 months today may be easy, but with time that may change or it may never become difficult. If going to HHI is not an absolute priority, then buying SSR or more AKL points make sense.

I would also probably add on at AKV in the same use year so you have additional room options at 11 months there now that you're outgrowing value studios.

AKV is likely to get harder to book as DVC expands at WDW.

I think it basically comes down to whether or not you want more flexibility when booking your WDW vacations and having more room options at 11 months vs. whether or not you really want to guarantee booking HHI at 11 months (which seems like the least likely aspect to be a problem out of all the considerations).

If you buy a separate DVC resort you can't use those points to book at 11 months at AKV, so you'll be stuck w/ split stays or hoping to add additional nights to your stay at 7 months.
