Where to buy a safe?

Where is the best place to buy a safe? Not a huge one just something large enough for papers, jewelry, cash, maybe cameras.

If its not a huge safe, make sure there is a way to internally bolt it to the floor (and that you're willing to drill into your foundation).

Otherwise it's just a convenient way for someone to walk away with all your valuables at once.

We have a slab foundation that we cannot drill into. What about mounting it in the wall?

We have a small fireproof safe from Walmart that we use to keep important papers and a few small items, but it was bought in case of a fire not theft.

That works too as long as you drill into the studs. Just make sure the safe is set up to accommodate that, as not all of them are. Bottom line, if its a small safe and not mounted to anything, someone can just walk away with it which defeats the point of having a safe.

To your original question, we bought ours at Costco, but I'd also give amazon a look so long as you can get free shipping (they can be heavy!)

You can anchor it into the slab too. Reminds me, I have to take mine in to get it drilled out. Dial froze up. Not a fan of Sentry safes right now.

We got ours at an office-supply store, probably OfficeMax, because it is the closest to where we live.

Ours is probably 2' tall x about 18" wide x about 18" deep, outside dimensions. It is VERY heavy. We got sick of rapidly increasing safety-deposit fees.

I only wish we would have gotten a bigger one, because I feel like it is a little too small. Make sure you look at the inside, especially if you want to store a bulky item(s) like camera(s).

Try an office liquidator. The guys who buy up commercial and office furniture when a business goes under.

This is a way to get a much higher quality safe at a reasonable price.

Also I am hit or miss on previously owned items. A safe I would gladly buy used

Agree on the size thing... I wish ours was bigger, but we will be getting a giant gun safe soon so just wait for that.

By the time you have all your families passports, birth certificates, SS cards, maybe a removable hard drive (we back up our pictures and keep it in here since its fire proof!), a few hundred bucks (we keep small bills), a few boxes of ammo, it fills up pretty fast -- especially if you try to keep it organized.

Agreed. I have a small safe in case of a fire. I am not worried about someone stealing any items.

Costco seems to advertise safes quite often.

We just sold one on Craigs List - try there if you are not in a hurry.
