Probably more about my own situation, but where I didn't have access to a car or good public transportation. I had a job interview in Boston once where my only transportation was the car service that the company paid for. Sent me right to the hotel, then to the interview sites (although one of the interviewers drove me to another site), and then straight to the airport. Felt really weird because I didn't have any means to get anywhere. I've had interviews where I had a rental car, and that gave me a certain amount of freedom. I've even had interviews in areas where I was specifically given an early flight and car rental so I could get a feel for the area.
I'm also thinking of the time we were visiting friends living in the suburbs of Philadelphia. We arrived via Amtrak and then waited for a ride from them to their home. But we weren't staying with them and got a ride from them to our hotel a few miles away from where they lived. But then we paid for a ride to a train station to get back to NYC for our flight home. But while we were there we needed some stuff and it was horrendous. We needed some stuff and there was a supermarket a couple of blocks away. But that was the absolutely worst place I've ever seen for pedestrians. Zero sidewalks (maybe some odd foot trails) and there were barely any crosswalks. I ran across the street when the light turned green but in the back of my mind I was risking my life.
