I know about Craigslist.....I have never tried Ebay before and was wondering what the fees were and if it is worth it to list an item on ebay!!!!!!!!!!!!

It really depends on what you are selling. I have sold my daughter's old toys on eBay and have gotten more than I thought I would. On the flip side, I have listed things I thought would sell for a certain price(like a handbag) and it hasn't sold or sold for less than I was hoping for. If you have an account you can search for the item you want to sell and then choose completed listings on the left side menu and you can get an idea what similar items have sold for.

Items that can be shipped, I would try Ebay. Search completed listings and see if anybody is buying the item and what prices they are paying. This too can fluctuate depending on the area of the country. I have had items bought from California bidders and they pay more for the item than I thought I would get, plus shipping.

Good luck!:wizard:

I have had great luck with Craigslist. We have bought cars, and sold gym equipment and tires and just about anything with luck so far. As far as Ebay goes, I just don't see how you can make any money with the fees they charge and then shipping charges. I will stick with Craigslist!:thumbsup2

Usually eBay sellers pass along the shipping and handling charges to the buyer. As a buyer, you have to check both the highest bid and the shipping charges to estimate the total cost.

I remember seeing something on sale for a minimum bid of $30, which was reasonable for the item, but the shipping was a whopping $50! I asked the seller about lowering it and they gave me some sob story that it really cost that much for the shipping. I checked with the post office and the cost should have been around $10 to ship the package.

The auction closed with the item unsold and the seller has relisted the item (at a slightly lower price, but the same shipping) repeatedly without ever receiving a bid. I have to think that they're including insurance and other items in the shipping cost, or using a more-expensive service since they keep that shipping cost at $50.

Everytime you list something on eBay, you pay a listing fee that is non-refundable. Photos are extra. That's why Craigslist is popular since there are no fees.

For big items that you don't want to ship, Craigslist is better. DH used Craigslist to sell a 5-year old electric stove that was in perfect working condition when we changed over to a natural gas stove.

on ebay the sellers are not charged a fee based on the shipping charge but on the ending bid, some sellers put there real profit in the shipping charge.

Yes but they could get kicked off of ebay for fee avoidance for doing that.

I posted some sports tickets on StubHub, Ebay, and Craigslist. StubHub charges a whopping fee to BOTH the buyer and seller equaling up to 25%!! Ebay charges a listing fee, a percentage, and then there is a charge to use PayPal payment system. All told you can expect to pay Ebay/Paypal around 5% of the cost, I'd guess. Craigslist is totally free of fees. It is sorta like an online yard sale. It is the way to go on many items .... depends on what it is. Collecters items that have a niche market might do best on Ebay for the wider audience, for instance.
