Where does the captain sleep and does wife cruise with him?

I don't know what made me think of this, but it must get really lonely for him without his spouse. And, more importantly, can he order all the room service he wants and go to Palo and order anything on his time off? I hope so, he sure deserves it for getting us everywhere safely.

The Captain's quarters are directly below the bridge. There are also rooms down there for VIP's.

Most married Captain's wives don't sail with them all the time. Some have kids, and the kids are in school, so they have homes on land. There have been times (especially during holidays) that we've seen the Captain's families with them, as well as other crew members and staff. It's the same for all of them...having family "back home". I've even met young women working on cruise ships who have babies back home that their mother or another family member takes care of! Hard to imagine, isn't it?

I'm certain they can order any food they want, any time. The Captain probably has his own small kitchen, though.
We have seen other officers with family visiting, and they eat in the dining rooms and at the buffet...on DCL and the other ships we've been on.
It's a different kind of life, that's for sure.

The Captain has his own dining room, it is quite nice and he gets great meals.
Our friend was invited to dine there one day for lunch while we were on the Panama cruise.

There were a lot of the ships officers families on board for the panama cruise, this is not the usual way, but, because of the special cruise they were invited. We saw many of them dining with their families in topsiders for dinner.

A book that will give you some behind the scenes view of a captain's life is The Captain's Log, Around the World with Cruise Captain Hans Mateboer. At one time he was a DCL captain, now with Holland America, I've heard.

Amazon carries it, I think, and if you do a google search for his name you can find an address to order it directly from him.

We found it a lot of fun to read, and hope he'll do a sequel!

Ok, I feel dirty now. But I couldn't help it. I was inspired.

I know the wife of a captain of a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, and she sails fairly often with him. At least half of the time that he's at sea, she's onboard with him. It seemed to me from our conversations that she was able to sail with him pretty much whenever it suited her. She had a job that allowed her to have large chunks of time off, at a time. I never thought to ask her how often she was "allowed" to sail. It seemed to me that it was entirely her and her husband's choice.

When we cruised DCL in August of 2004, I know that the Captain (or maybe it was one of the other officers, but someone fairly high up), had his wife and baby on board that cruise. If anyone knows whether Captain Tom has young children or not, that'd clarify who it was. LOL I seem to remember it was the Captain, but perhaps not. LOL This was the 10-night Hurricane cruise so we all had a lot on our minds, especially each time we'd hear the chime to let us know that the Captain was about to make (yet another!) announcement. The entire ship would stop in their tracks to listen....

There is a special dining room off of Palo's for the officers. One year the server we had a previous cruise was sailing with the first officer and came out to visit with us. She told us that they were back in the crews dining room.

During my 2005 cruise, the captain, his wife and another couple dined at the table next to us at Palo for brunch. Who was manning the wheel at that point, I don't know. I amangine they have free reighn!

When we were on the Magic in March, Captain Thord's parents were onboard and he dined in the dining room every night with them (they were on our rotation and they were seated near us)...and they were even in Palo for brunch on our sea day. Captain Thord is very nice and even came over to our table in Palo's as he remembered us from the Panama Canal cruise.

When we were on November Eastern Magic last year (week after Thanksgiving), Captains wife was onboard and they were in Treasure Ketch buying jewelry, I think they said they were celebrating their anniversary.

She was quite nice and very friendly with my teenage dds who were ogling all the jewelry.

There is an extensive written policy about which officers can have family sail, etc. At least one of the cruise directors routinely cruises with her daughter and a nanny. Most of the DCL officers and crew have wonderful things to say about how "family friendly" DCL is.

I was pouring over the deck plans and noticed a large unaccounted for section forward on the 7th deck. I was told that the captian's and other VIP cabins where there. WELL, as we were getting on the elevator on deck 1 returning from St. Maarten, the Captian and another officer joined us, rode up to 7 and went through a door past the 7500 cabins. I caught a glance through that door several times. (We were in 7505 & 7507) and it did look like it may have been "cabins" There is a bank of round "Portholes" across the front of the ship on deck 7 that "we" can't get to.

I figure that this is the case. Who all is there??? Don't know??
