Where do you store your 12X12 albums

I have a problem trying to find a place to store my completed albums. Right now they are on a bookshelf with the ends hanging off. I hate the way that looks. Does anyone else store there albums a different way or have a bookshelf that is deep enough and will not cost a fortune? Thanks for your help in advance!!! :earsgirl:

I'm lucky in that I have two sets of built in bookcases flanking the fireplace in my livingroom that are deep enough for 12 x 12 albums. The open shelves start about half way up the wall over closed front cabinets. Some older books (not what we'd call scrapbooks today) are in the cabinets and the rest on shelves above. The first shelf (which is really the top of the cabinet) is fine but when I started filling the next one up DH had to devise a reinforcement system because of the weight.

That being said I hate to admit that those shelves and cabinets have many other things like framed photos, etc so I have several albums sitting around on various surfaces. That is one of the projects for this summer - to rearrange things to get them all properly stored but so far it isn't getting done.

That doesn't help you too much but you might try one of the office furniture stores and see if they have deeper shelving units...

They are on the bottom shelf of my entertainment center and it's deep enough. Sorry, no advice for you though. I never thought about it. It would bug me if they hung off too. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a deeper book shelf.

This is a good question. My old photo albums that I had before I started scrapping are stored on shelves that run around the top of my walk-in closet. My concern w/that is heat rises and altho our house is A/C (of course) my closet door is kept closed so seldom does cool air get into my closet. It doesn't face an outside wall but I have noticed a few times that my closet seems stuffy. With that being said, since I have started scrapbooking, I have some of my albums standing up in a cabinet in my bedroom I used to use to sit my stereo on and put albums in....as in record albums...LPs....yes, I still have some of the 70 bands and a few 80s....I was so into Heavy Metal for a while........and then big hair, disco etc. :rotfl2: ANYWAY......I have some of my "regular" travel photo albums stored in our entertainment center but running out of space. Of course if I got rid of all the kids videos in there, that'd open up more room....

Now here's a question that goes along w/this same topic.....a former CMC I used to buy from told me to never "stand up" my albums....always lay them down w/the binder facing the outside. Any reason why to stand them up instead of lay them down? I can see a few reasons why but just wondering what everyone else had heard, been told etc.
Thanks for a great thread.

I am lucky that Dh is handy -
my oldest dd has all her albums in her room (5 right now I think) - we took the space abover her closet and made a big deep storage cubby and there is tons of room there just about 12 1/2 high so they fit perfect!
all my other ones are now on sheves that dh made in a little area in our bedroom - nothin fancy as were not staying here - pine board shelves - but perfect for all my scra-crap. And all my unscrapped stock of albums are on wire closet organizer shelves in one of the 2 closets in our bedroom. (again set up to accomodate them!
In the new house I will have custom 'nice' book shelves in the office (my dh calls a library :rotfl2: )

A former CMC told you to never stand yours up, and a CMC told me to never lay mine down flat! Now I don't know what to do! Please, does anyone have any insight? Mine are currently standing up, but I don't want to do anything to damage the pictures or pages!!!

Although I am a "bad girl" and have several laying on various surfaces right now (even a couple that are stacked) the reason not to lay them flat is this causes the pages to rub against each other with more pressue - especially when it comes to "bumpy" embellishments. I guess the idea is if they are standing up on a shelf they won't be squashing against each other...uh huh....

Just a question after reading this thread. Why, after all the work you all have put into your scrapbooks, are you hiding them in closets??? I keep mine right out in the open where the kids can look at them frequently and I keep my most recent, i.e. disney cruise, right on the coffee table so that guests can take a peek. I work too hard on these to stash them away.

well for me -
I have 5 people in 5 rooms -
and I hate clutter and messes -
so until the new house is done and there is a place for everything and everthing in its place my albums are in the safest - non baby reachable spots - that they can be (bl - before Lauren - I had them under my TV in the entertainment center ;)

Sadly, on the top shelf of a hall closet. My 2.5 yo dd loves the albums a bit too much. She especially enjoyes pulling items off the page and chewing on them!! Yummy.

We have an entertainment center from Ikea that was inexpensive and deep enough for me to store my scrapbooks. It also has a glass door, so my books are protected from my 5 cats as well as dust, but still visible to show off.

Understood...my boys are teenagers and I've forgotten about how curious little ones can be. Now I know why you're hiding them away in closets. In a few years, you can bring them out and wow everyone!

I went everywhere, furniture stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Office Max....and I mean everywhere. Finally had the DH build me an awesome book shelf. 4 shelfs high (5 if you count the top) 15 inces deep, 3 foot wide 15 inches of height in between shelfs. He made if from black formica covered MDF. It is very very heavy. But it is AWESOME. Makes me albums and snow globes look cool! He also made me a set of cubbies to match. There are 8 paper cubbies 13x13x4 and 6 storage cubbies 13x13x8. He mounted it right above my table....woo hoo! What a great DH he is.

Now for the lay flat, stand up right ?......anyone get a good answer to this yet? Mine are upright on my shelves. Yikes! hope that is ok. :confused3
