I have read on a previous post about a place where you can rent cribs, playpens, box fans, etc. and can't remember the name of the website. Our toddler is a very light sleeper and we need a box fan for the noise. We are planning on flying and would rather rent one than ship one down there.

I'm a very light sleeper and never go anywhere without my white noise machine. I picked it up several years ago at Target and think I paid like $19.00 for it. It has several different sounds you can pick from. It fits easily into my carry on. It's about 8"x8"x3". It's alot easier to deal with than a big box fan and the noise can be adjusted as loud as I want it.

Another plus is that it is alot safer with a little one around.

I was going to say the same thing -- my 2 kids sleep with a white noise machine from Target for under $20. It's near their pharmacy area and aromatherapy stuff, if I recall. We take it on all trips and just toss it in the luggage. Luckily there's a Target in almost every town, as we have been known to forget it a time or two :sad2:

"a baby's best friend" That was the website I was thinking about but couldn't remember the name.

As far as the noise machines, do you think it would scare a toddler? Do they make the same noise as a fan makes? DH has an alarm clock that makes nature sounds and I know this would not work.

The noise is very similar and not scary. The volume control helps with that. Buy one and try it out at home first so he is used to it.

I think I will run out to Target today and get one.

If this will be in the room you're in, be aware that the one from Target (I think it's Homedics) has a short loop of the sound, and you can hear the repeating. Unless they fixed this in the last few years since we bought one! We used to use a fan for noise, and then bought the Homedics one, but found that we lay awake listening to the looping, and it drove us crazy! We've since purchased a travel one like this http://www.marpac.com/330.asp and couldn't imagine sleeping without it! You might look around and read review online before purchasing. It's possible they fixed the looping problem, but I can remember looking at reviews AFTER we purchased ours and seeing several people also mention the annoying looping. I was kind of glad to see other people noticed it and it wasn't just me imagining things.

I bought a small, travel sized white noise machine on sale at Walgreens last year. It was in the small electronic section, hanging on the wall. It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. It works great! We used to bring the bulkier machine from Target that people are talking about (we use it in the kids room) but the smaller version is do much easier to pack. One set of batteries lasted all week.

We rented a fan from ABBF once and schleped one down there 2 other times. The bad thing about renting from ABBF is that there is a $50 minimum order. The fans were 10 bucks. So I ended up renting some toys and stuff just to add up to the 50 bucks.

The other 2 times I packed one in a suitcase and put clothes under and over it.

Next time I'll just pack one. Honestly it was easier just having it with us than it was messing with renting it and then waiting for bell services to find it in the luggage room, etc, etc...

They're really not that heavy in the suitcase and I didn't really think it was that big of a deal.

My problem with noise machines is that I can never find one that is loud enough for us.
