Where do you pack your camera batteries?

I usually buy extra batteries for our digital cameras when we get to Disney, last year it cost me a small fortune, this year I want to buy the lithium batteries here and bring them. I figured it would save me about 20.00. I've never packed batteries before, would you put them in your bag to carry on? or pack them in your suitcase? Or doesnt it make a difference going through the x-ray machine?

Lithium batteries are awesome. I get hundreds more pics out of them than regular AAs.

I carry my camera equipment on and have never had any problems.

Same here. Camera and memory comes with me, charger and extra batteries in the checked luggage.

I would never in a million years pack ANY of my camera equipment in checked luggage. If your checked lugagge is delayed (it's rarely truly LOST, but delays of a day or 2 aren't terribly uncommon), then your camera may be somewhat useless without the extra memory, extra batteries, film (remember film??), etc.

I just don't get it -- batteries and memory cards and chargers are so small, so why NOT carry them on, just to be safe???

If your checked lugagge is delayed (it's rarely truly LOST, but delays of a day or 2 aren't terribly uncommon), then your camera may be somewhat useless without the extra memory, extra batteries, film (remember film??), etc.

I guess because my camera I generally take on vacation runs on AA batteries, which in a pinch I could buy anywhere to get me through a day or two. But thankfully, I have never had a luggage delay. (Knocking on all my wooden surroundings now.) All my memory comes with me, even though I usually only use one large capacity card those are just too expensive to replace if lost. As for the charger, small but heavy. And I generally don't carry on much besides a large purse. If I were bringing a camera which didn't run on AA, I might think differently.

The x-ray machines won't hurt the batteries at all, but I do worry about the lower pressure in the cargo compartment of the plane causing AA battery cells to swell and burst - anyone ever hear of that happening?

Anyway, all of my sensitive and fragile electronics go in my carry-on bag, and the batteries just go with them, mostly for convenience.

I had never heard of that happening. Now THAT might cause me to think differently about packing the batteries in my checked bag. Yikes. Anyone else?

OMG, that was my thought excatly, Iam sorta afraid to pack batteries in my suitcase, although I have never heard of that before, I suppose it could happen??

Have you thought about buying rechargeable batteries? Recharargeable batteries usually last a few hours longer in cameras than throw away ones. I purchased my charger and batteries at Target for around $10.

I have a 15 minute rayovac charger and batteries, it charges special rayovac batteries in 15 minutes, anything else the normal overnight. But of course now they seem to have stopped making those batteries. So I'm thinking of picking up a Duracell quick charger and a couple sets of batteries, which I think I've seen the charger and 4 batteries sell for $20-$30 at Target or Wal-Mart. I like these just because I can throw batteries in the charger while I'm in the shower in the morning if I forgot the night before. Since I'm sometimes a scatterbrain, it's worth the extra $$ to me.

Also, I rarely find myself needing to change the batteries in my digital during the day, so two sets is plenty.

I also got sick of buying AA batteries, 'cause I take THOUSANDS of pictures on every vacation. So, last year I found a Duracell 1 hour charger that came with 4 rechargable batteries. The great thing about the one I bought is that it not only came with a wall plug, but came with a car charger, too! So now I can charge batteries on the go! The charger & 4 batteries was around $20, and the extra set was around $12? I think I found them at Walmart or Target. I just throw the whole thing in my camera bag, and the camera bag goes with me everywhere!

Sounds like most folks in this thread use point-n-shoot cameras, so this wouldn't be a consideration but -

Rechargable batteries tend to cycle a flash unit faster between shots. I use rechargables (AAs) in my Canon Speedlite flash and the unit is ready to pop again much quicker than when I use alkaline batteries.

I agree! I'm in both boats. My normal everyday throw in my purse camera is a Nikon Coolpix, but at work I use a Nikon D200 or a Finepix S9600. Rechargeable batteries work extremely well in both kinds of cameras.

On our next trip to WDW in July, daughter will have her digital camera & charger for the batteries. I'll have my Kodak advantix & LOTS of film (I do remember film, thank heavens) because we lost lots of pictures during AK safari. The delay in the digital drove us nuts & I ran out of film! The charger I'll have will be for our cell phones!

I will, however, bring extra batteries for our mini fans; purchasing extras at the parks will cost far too much so we'll bring them with us in our carryon luggage.

I figure if I have a new unopened pack of AA's, checking thru security shouldn't be too bad, right?
