Trying to choose a maingate-area hotel for our upcoming trip in May. I'll be travelling with my DSis and her two littlest grandkids (GS 7 & GD 6). They're all first timers and have no way to understand just how much walking we'll need to be doing each day. I'm just off Google Earth and can't see where the cross-walks are; which hotel is really the most convenient? Any advice is appreciated.

The Candy Cane Inn isn't as close as BWPPI but it's on the same side of the street as DLR so no need to cross Harbor. There is one street that you cross but it's some sort of road for DLR employees only so there isn't really any traffic that goes through on that part of the intersection. CCI also has it's own shuttle so you can walk if you feel like it or you can take their shuttle. I'm not normally a fan of shuttles but i've had no problems with this one when i've used it.

The Best Western Park Place Inn is directly in front of the cross walk at the main entrance of DLR.

Have you stayed there? It's one of my first choices, along with HoJo because of the great-looking swimming pool area and the Jolly Roger (just because it seems so gosh-darned quaint). During my 2004 trip we stayed at BW Pavillions (cheap and fine for our purposes at the time), but we had a rental car and drove over to the Mickey & Friends parking area. Trying to do it as easily as possible without a car this time (and will not be going anywhere except DL & DCA). Any other input?

Thanks in advance,

I have stayed there once a few years back. Nothing fancy by any means but it was clean and quiet. The location was great (five minutes from our room to the turnstiles) and the breakfast was decent (cereal, donuts, pastries, toast, boiled eggs, juice, milk and coffee). The pool area was plain but well maintained.

I would stay there again.

We will be staying there on our next trip & I can't wait to experience the short walk, as opposed to the long walk back to the Fairfield after a long day at the parks!!

When I go to DL with my friend, we normally stay at the BWPPI. We were just there over MLK weekend in January. Clean, quiet and great location. We are staying at the Carousel this coming weekend. When we were there in January, I counted and from driveway to driveway, the Carousel was only about another 60 steps up the street from the Park Place. Now, granted I take BIG steps, but still pretty darned close.

We have stayed at HOJO, BWPPI, and Jolly Roger at different times over the last 7 years. Jolly Roger would be my least favorite, because it does seem like a long walk at the end of the night, and I didn't think it was anything spectacular. BWPPI is nice and of course the closest. However, we really enjoyed HOJO last time we went. The rooms were so much bigger and I really liked the updated feel. We didn't use the pool big it did look very cute. If prices were comparable, I would probably go with BWPPI, but if you can can the ET/retro rate at HOJO then I would pick that.

If you stay at HoJo, I cross Harbor at Manchester. Keeps you away from the slow-moving crowds as well as cars and trucks (and delivery trucks especially!) entering and exiting the hotel parking lots on the "hotel side" of the street.

Yes, Jolly Roger is quite a hike..about 20 minutes at a good pace. I do like it for things at the Convention Center though and will stay there during the Expo. The outside is pretty icky, but the rooms have been redone and are overall nice. No breakfast though and to have a refrigerator in the room costs extra per day....do they have a shuttle? don't recall, but when I asked them to call a cab I got one without a meter so really not authorized so won't do that again.
I had booked the JR through their site for $89 a night, but then found the rates on Hotels.com had gone down to $70 so changed to that. I use hotels.com for all my hotel bookings now and you get a free night after 10 so really works well.
