Dh and I are in the market for some new furniture, we need the whole shabang..
New couch set, and new mattress and we would like to get a platform bed. However, we have had the WORST luck with furniture. We get it and like a year later its tearing, fading...AWFUL! (and its just 2 adults and one not so rough girl)
Is it just us or is there actually furniture out there that lasts??
:confused3

we bought our couch and chair from a small local furniture store here......we actually need a new couch too. actually the other chair is from that store too. so all our living room furniture is from the same furniture store.
i bought the bunkbeds at a bunkbed specialty store.
the other bed came from an unfinished furniture store, and my hubby painted it, it has the LLBean "look"
another bed came from a different larger furniture store.

I want a new couch, but I don't want to spend a lot, because between kids, dogs, cats, etc our furniture takes a beating!

We opt for Walter E Smithe... You pay much more then any other furniture store, but you get what you want. Basically its custom designed, you get to pick the style, colors, material. We just purchased a sofa for our family room from them, it's gorgeous. When it comes to furniture and appliances I do pay more for better quality. :thumbsup2

You get what you pay for in furniture. Don't buy from a cheap wearhouse place. Try and find a discount store that sells name brand stuff. You really don't want to skip on quality. You can even try some of the department stores. I bought a leather italian sofa from Hechts a few years ago and it is holding up really well.

Well all my new furniture is from Ethan Allen. It's all sitting in the warehouse right now waiting for my house to be finished but I'm sure it'll be good quality when it finally comes.

Ikea all the way, except for their sofas as I really don't like the feel of their materials- I haven't checked out their leather sofas though. There are several different tiers of furniture quality at Ikea but if there's not a local store then the shipping costs would probably negate your savings. You can order a free catalog from their website just to check out styles and decorating ideas. After having new sofa's and living room furniture sets I second the idea of second-hand furniture with kids and pets. I got a gorgeous sofa, loveseat, chair off ebay from a local seller for $300 about 5 years ago and it's lasted better than anything I'd purchased new in the past for much more $$. His family was changing their decor and I really wanted his neutral toned comfy set which really wasn't worn. Besides that I didn't have to cringe everytime my boys came in and sat down in dirty sports clothes or their friends had snacks while sitting on that furniture. I know it's best if no one eats or drinks while on living room furniture but it's life and I'm too relaxed for those kinds of rules...sigh.---Kathy

Aren't you moving soon :goodvibes ? If so I'd definitely wait until you get to your new location before buying anything - no point in running the risk of new stuff being damaged in the move. Finding furniture stores in your new town is a great way to get to know the area and how to get around. I agree that for the most part you get what you pay for in material, construction, etc. You can probably look at your current furniture and decide what part of it wears out first and why... like is it the material on the cushions, the cushions themselves? Then pay close attention to those areas when you look at new stuff to avoid the same potential wear issue. IMO furniture shopping is kinda fun if you have a lot of time to spend looking and deciding what you actually like (and can afford).

I have had quite a few Ikea pieces fall apart on me- but for what I paid, they served their purpose and I got my $$$ worth. I like the Room Store (East Coast) They seem to have low-end prices and mid-range quality- I got nice leather sofas there and also a great media unit. I am pleased with the quality. There was a problem with one of the lights on the media unit, I had to call and tell them there was a problem and they have great customer service. They replaced the item and sent someone out to replace the light.

I have a broyhill sofa from Pennys of all places. It is holding up the best of any that I have had so far. I also use pottery barn alot and then we have a model home furnishing outlet where I have gotten alot of tables.

Best of luck to you.

We've bought most of our pieces at Jordan's furniture (Mass) and have been very happy. I honestly think with Bob's or any of those type stores, you are not getting quality.

I love love love Lane Furniture. I've purchased items from NC too. I like Lane because the usually run promos where they'll give you so many months to pay it off.

With furniture, you so get what you pay for! WE bought IKEA stuff after we were first married because it was the stuff they used on the Real World-MTV. This was 1995 by the way. When we moved a year later our movers were taking our dresser out of the truck and the entire thing was shifting. The guy looked at me and asked, "Ikea?" I said "Yes." He told me that I was lucky because Ikea usually doesn't survive a move. We tossed all of it out about 6 months after that and never bought cheap again.

I like Raymour and Flanigan-I have bought lots of Broyhill and Lane and Pennsylvania House from them.

I bought some things from Ethan Allen also. I would reccomend any of them.

Naturally you are going to get what you pay for but sometimes you don't know what you are paying for. The next time you go to look at furniture take the time to crawl around and knock on it whether it be the back of a headboard or the underside of a table. You'll be suprised at the number of "quality" stores that is using pressed board now. You can tell the difference because solid wood won't have a light tap.

I also have some Ethan Allan pieces but I tend to shop quite a bit at the Ashley Home furniture store. I've had good luck there with quality after going around knocking on everything;)

I buy used, too. :thumbsup2

I have Thomasville in my bedroom, some Ethan Allen, some Ikea (ugh - they do not last), some from Decorum which is based in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, some This End is Up for the kids, and some no-name-but-real-wood-that-I-refinished stuff, too.

My parents own a packing and moving company in Hawaii. For those moves that manage to have IKEA items he has experienced the same thing.

I despise pressed wood. :headache:

I too have gotten furniture from Jordan's (NH), I also have some JC Penny's and Macey's.

Hi Tina...:goodvibes

Thanks for the tips guys, We have shopped Raymour before, but they don't sell all "name brand" do they? Isn't alot of their stuff "off brand" that is where we got our current couch, and it is JUNK!
:upsidedow

Raymour does sell name brands like Broyhill, Natuzzi (leather) Lane, and Pennsylvania House (our Raymour has a PH gallery I love to walk through).

I have bought all of these brands there including Stanley-my daughters bedroom furniture and have never had a problem with any of it.

I second Ashley's. We purchased a sleeper sofa from them last year and bought the extended warranty, we have 2 preteen boys. Well after using the bed several times something happened, still not exactly sure what, but the bed would not fold up. So I called and they sent a guy out to look at it. He said he had to order a part and helped get the bed back in until the part could be order. Well, the "part" was a new sofa. I can tell you I honestly wasn't expecting that.
