Hey everyone! I am currently planning a trip for April 2007 and what to know where to start. My party has already decided the dates of the vacation but I don't know where to go from here. Do I book the flight? Hotel? What?! Haha! But, keep in mind, I am planning with people who think making reservations is dumb, who think that you can get a cab to anywhere in Florida from any Disney Hotel concierge (can you?), and that getting full stay hopper passes is a bad idea since half the time we will just be "hanging out". They obviously don't know that this is DISNEY WORLD, NOT A VACATION!!! :rotfl:

Thanks in Advance!

BTW: I woul absolutely LOVE to be boo'ed!

Well, you're in the right place! Read, read, read the DIS, including boards. You might also read AllEarsNEt.com to get a sense of things. I also love the Unofficial Guide for a touring-strategies book. Other like the Passporter. I'm sure you'll hear positives on both. (And you could always invest in two!)

One of the first things you'll want to decide is how to handle the big travel plans--airfare, hotel, transportation, tickets. Do you want to a la carte your vacation or do you want a package? Also, do you want to make the arrangements, or would you prefer other folks handle it? These are some big questions to ask while you plan the "basics" of your trip. I like to plan most of the trip myself, as I'm an OCD Disney planner! :rotfl: But you might want to read a few threads that talk about AAA travel and others. (I'll see if I can find some links.)

Keep these ideas in mind while you're looking around the DIS. I found that even one evening on the boards gave me a much better sense of what I wanted out of a Disney vacation, so congratulations on joining our happy family.

As for the BOO, check your PMs.

EDITED TO ADD: You might like the Mousesavers site, too!

Hi and welcome aboard.

If your April trip is anywhere near Easter, you'd better have some serious plans laid down, or you will just be hanging at a resort or hotel.

You can usually get a cab anywhere, but you'll be paying for it. Taxi fares are pricey in the Greater Orlando/WDW area.

You'll want ADRs for any full service restaurant that you really want to have a meal at. You'll run the risk of not being able to be served without one. Walk ins are having a very hard time now with DDP, plus April is busy.

Get a WDW guide and show your friends just how much there is to do. That may help them understand that WDW is huge and going without at least some concept of what you want to do is a good way to get very frustrated.

thanks so much! I have been hanging out at the boards for a while now and decided that I am going to include it in every step of my planning!

ADR - advanced dining reservation
You also will want to know the abbreviations used on the Disboards

Park hopper - can't imagine not doing this option! DH & I tend do something in the morning, back to resort in afternoon, someplace else for evening. We use the bus system, including the Disney Magical Express from the airport to our resort.

I don't think you start doing this until approx. the 10th trip. I could be wrong
though. :thumbsup2

Hi
and :welcome: to the Dis..
I would first make reservations at a Resort then book your flight b/c if you cant get the flight druing that time you can always call back and modify your res. I am realyl not sure how it is flying to Disney and getting a cab in the Orlando airport being that I am only 3 hours away, but I would def. do the Res. first.. or put them on hold until you can figure out your flight departure and time....
Good luck

I just went through this myself last year as I was planning my honeymoon. It was my first trip to WDW as an adult, so it was my first time planning it. For me, planning the trip was 1/2 the fun. I loved going on the WDW website, checking out all of my resort options, configuring different packages, looking for the best airline rates on Expedia.com and other travel website, and just generally planning the trip.

I'll give you my real quick answer, and then I'll expand on it later. (You can just skip over my long winded response if you like. I won't be offended.) I would book resort, then flight, then ADR's for 2-3 meals during your trip (I was able to wing it most of my honeymoon), and above all, plan on using Disney transportation as much as possible. The Magical Express from and to the Orlando airport is wonderful. And you can walk, take a bus, boat or monorail to anywhere on Disney property that you would want to go. It is a huge money saver when you don't have to rent a car or worry about a taxi.

Ok, so that was my short answer. Here is the director’s cut, extended version of that. The first thing I did (if you haven't already done so) is figure out a budget. I set a limit on how much I could spend on what I call "the four horsemen of travel" -- airfare, a vehicle at your destination, accommodations, and food. I first got a general idea of how much the flight would cost me. I had read all about the different free travel options from the airport and on Disney property, so I knew my budget for Disney property transportation would be $0.00. I went to AllEarsNet.com and checked out all of the menus on that site. This gave me a good idea of how much we'd be spending on food while down there. (As it turned out, after I had my resort booked they introduced the free dining plan, which I was able to add on so I was able to have more money for souvenirs.) This exercise gave me a ballpark figure of how much I could spend on resort accommodations.

I had already made up my mind that I would be staying onsite, so after I had an idea in mind of how much I could spend, I had to figure out where to stay. This is one of the more difficult parts of the planning. Each resort level and each individual resort in that level have their own plusses and minuses. So try to figure out what you want out of your resort, and find one in your budget that meets your needs. I started by configuring different packages online at different level resorts. After about a week of doing this for 30-45 minutes every night, I was sold on a resort (the Contemporary) and a room level (Tower). I already knew that I would want park hopper tickets for my entire stay (minus get-away day since we wouldn't have any time to hit a park before we had to leave for the airport), so I had already included that in my package.

After I had this all figured out, I called Disney directly to book my package. I had the printout from the website in front of me, so I told the CM exactly what I wanted. After a 10-minute phone call, I was booked at Disney World!

The next step was to keep an eye on airline rates. When they got to a point where I didn't think they would go lower, I booked them as well. As it turns out, two days after I booked my flight the rates went up about $50/flight. So I was happy.

Then I started on our meals. We printed off a few menus from AllEars that looked appealing to us. We then decided where we wanted to eat, and what days we wanted to eat there. And at 180 days out, I called and made my ADR's. The last step in this process was the most difficult -- the waiting!!!

Well, if you made it through this far, I hope I was able to help you out a little bit. Happy planning!

Thank you so much! That helped me alot. I just have one question: how exactly did u make the packages up? Did you use the official Walt Disney World website? THANKS A BUNCH!

Yup, go to disneyworld.com. I could swear that where it says "Purchase Your Tickets", that you used to also be able to look for resorts there too. But anyway, I recommend that you click on the "My Disney Vacation" button on the top right of the page. After you register, you can put together different packages with resorts and ticket plans. You can save I believe up to 5 different packages (they might call them itineraries) to compare and contrast. That is how I did it. You can also book your vacation directly from there, but I just felt more comfortable talking to a live person rather than booking online. But I know of people who did it online and didn't have any problems.

(I see that right now their system is down. So give it a couple hours, and hopefully their crack IT staff can get it resolved.)

EDIT: I didn't read this thread before posting this message. You should be able to start your research sometime Monday, October 23.
