We're taking our first trip this weekend for DH's birthday. I don't know much about US/IOA but I'm hoping to meet some characters. Can anyone tell me where to find......

Donkey-near the exit of Shrek 4 in USO
Dora-sometimes near Jimmy Neutron, but not always out (USO)
Shrek-with Donkey, or hanging around Shrek 4 area (USO)
Scooby Doo-can be seen with the Mystery Machine and the Mystery Gang around USO (most likely Woody Woodpecker's KidZone)
SpongeBob-At the exit of Jimmy Neutron, in the gift shop part (USO)
Fiona-with Shrek and Donkey near Shrek 4 (USO)
Fred Flinstone-not there anymore (I think)
George Jetson-not there anymore (I think)
Green Goblin-near Dr. Doom (Doom Alley) (IoA)
Simpson's characters-at the front of USO, perhaps near (what will be) Simpson's ride (check a guide)
Jimmy Neutron-near his ride, same deal as Dora (might not be out all the time;USO)

i don't think it's at universal...but, i can be sure i saw a barney show at mgm studeos... or at least one of the theme parks, something like...a day in the park with barney

There is a Barney show at the Studios and a meet & greet afterwards and play area....

No problem! There are other characters too, ya know. We saw Cat in the Hat, Things 1 and 2, Guy, Sam-I-Am, Grinch, the Marvel Superheroes (and SPIDERMAN!), among others, all at IoA.

(Best part is, the superheroes talk to your kids! They're "super"nice, lol)

Additionally....

In the Studios there were also the Madagascar characters, Woody Woodpecker and Ms. Woodpecker (name is escaping me right now), and we have encountered Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat, and assorted "Hollywood" characters such as Marilyn Monroe.

In IOA, along with the superheroes, we have encountered Popeye, Olive Oyl, and other cartoon characters in Toon Lagoon.

I'm gonna post this ammendment to what others have already said, since no one seems to have caught it, as far as I can see...

You won't find the Green Goblin anywhere anymore. They phased both him and Dr. Doom out of Marvel Superhero Island years ago, and replaced them with occasional appearances from the X-Men's Cyclops. (I also saw the Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman 1 time during IOA's New Years Eve Bash, but have never once seen her again, so I don't exactly know what her deal was.)

I think it was a stupid move on Universal's part, since The Goblin & Doom both rocked, but I guess they found it illogical that super-villains would do meet and greets alongside super-heroes.

will any of the characters sign thier autograph like at disney? Would we need an autograph book for US or IOA? This will be our first time there and I know my boys are going to love seeing some different characters this time. Thank you!

Yup, they do indeed sign autographs. You can pick up an autograph book in any of the stores.

We were at IOA and the Studios last week (1/16 - 1/18). Here are the characters we saw - they all sign autographs too. Most characters did not come out until 10:00 AM.

Studios:
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy were hanging out near the exit for T2 movie.
Bullwinkle - near the entrance for T2
Jimmy Neutron - near entrance for Jimmy Neutron Ride
Dora - near entrance for Jimmy Neutron ride when Jimmy wasn't there
Spongebob - in the Nick store\where the Jimmy Neutron ride exits
Woody Woodpecker and Miss Woodpecker - in the Woody Woodpecker kids area.
Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa Simpson - near the Kwik-E-Mart where the new Simpsons ride is being built. We also saw Homer and Marge out front of the Studios as we were leaving one day.

Shrek - near the exit for the Shrek movie
Donkey - near the exit for the Shrek movie

There were also two Egyptian looking guys on stilts walking around near the Mummy ride that were pretty cool.

Marilyn Monroe - near the entrance to the Studios...right outside the Lucy Tribute.
Dezi Arnez look a-like - driving around in a car that came out near the Horror and Make up show entrance.
Blues Brothers - They sing up by Finnegans pub and the entrance to the mummy.

IOA
The Grinch - on the street in the middle of Seuss Landing
Thing 1 and Thing 2 - in the Seuss book store or at the character breakfast
Cat in the Hat -- in the Seuss book store or at the character breakfast
tall Yellow Dr. Seuss Character - on the street in the middle of Seuss Landing
tall White dr. Seuss Character with black hat - on the street in the middle of Seuss Landing

We saw all of these superheros in the Marvel area. About every hour they would all ride out on four wheelers from near the Dr. Doom ride to the main area and pose for pictures and sign autographs.
Spider man (also at the character breakfast)
Rogue
Storm
Wolverine
Captain America
Cyclops

After about 15 or 20 minutes an alarm would sound and they would all jump on the four wheelers and ride off. I think they come back out every hour or so.

Toon Lagoon area:
Betty Boop - outside betty boop store
Woody Woodpecker - near entrance to toon lagoon heading in from Marvel area.

That is all I can remember for now. It took me about 3 times to get a picture with Shaggy and Scooby because they were always leaving to take a break whenever we saw them.

Hi, There were tons of characters all over both parks when we were there, shrek and Simpsons were outside the gates of Universal Studios in the morning...they are promoting the new Simpson ride so they are everywhere...
My kids got more photo's and autographs from Island of Adventure and Universal then Disney..

even Beetlejuice was there~
