We are driving from Mass with 3 adults and 3 kids (one in a carseat) so we need a big suv. I cannot for the life of me find someplace that rents suburbans, expeditions, etc. We need a 7 or 8 passenger for everyone to be comfortable, so all the standard suv aren't big enough.

Ideas please??

Most suburbans sit 6 or 7. Make sure there is no console in the front and the rear seats have three seat belts for it and not just two. That will make 8 seats.

Be prepared for a sticker shock when you rent - Premium SUV's come at a price. Many online car rental companies will allow you to edit your selections and that is when full size and premium size SUV's come up.

alamo from logan

A larger minivan will have the same capacity and a much more comfortable ride. It will also be better on gas.

A couple of years ago when we drove down we rented a expedition from avis. Somehow i managed to get a rate of $356 for nine days with the entertainment book coupon!!

We had eight people all together and it was the MOST comfy drive down, that thing was huge and surprisingly not too bad on gas.

When we drove down in 03, I had an expedition. It really wasn't that bad on gas, not as bad as I had expected. The seat I was in was very comfy for the ride....I had the 2 front "captains" seats.

I know on the alamo site, you have to change it way down the bottom of the webpage, after they bring up the car selections. We are getting an envoy next week, says it's 7 passengers.

Hertz rents them. After you get to the screen showing the cars find the "show all cars" line at the top of the car listing. If the location you wants has one it will show on there. It's going to be very costly!

All major companies will rent them (Avis and Hertz for sure) but you will be MUCH better off renting two intermediates if that is possible...

Thanks everyone. We know it's going to be a lot, but it's cheaper than flying the 6 of us down, probably by a few hundred dollars, and we're staying at Windsor Hills so we'd need to rent something even if we flew. I'm figuring it will be around $850-900.

You may also want to take a look at the Crossover SUVs....I know both National and Alamo have them, haven't looked at any of the others for availability. They're a cross between SUV and mini-van and can seat between 7 and 8 depending on layout. I rented one for 10 days from Alamo out of Lincoln, NE (very small airport, usually quite a bit more expensive than MCO) for $405.

Just FYI, be VERY careful about the fine print in the rental agreement when you plan to drive a rented vehicle across the country. Some agencies ban this or will charge a surcharge if you go outside a certain perimeter from the origination point (and they know if you do it, because they have GPS beacons installed.)
