Well, if it's "public record", what good is the information for verification purposes? Why couldn't I obtain that public information, provide the answer, and be you?
I don't know.

I guess they figured a thief might get rattled and only half listen. Whereas, the real person somehow has all this trivial info stuffed into our heads and we'd recognize immediately what the right answer would be.

Plus, each time, they ask about FIVE security questions. Say I got the car question & the bank date question wrong, things are not looking good for me.

A general PSA from all of this: Go to your bank and ask them for the info when you opened your bank accounts & file it away to have on hand. You never know when you will be asked it. When I ended up going to the bank the next morning, I asked for the info. Now, with my bank's recent merger/takeover, I no longer know what the correct answer is again.
