Where can I find fried dough?

My Italian side calls it Pizza Freet (Freta/Frete?-not sure the correct spelling).

And we stretch it out too & fry it in about 1/2 inch of oil & then put it on a paper towel to de-grease.

We put gravy (sauce for some of you) & sometimes grated cheese on it, sugar or powdered sugar on it. My dad spreads butter on it.

I loved growing up in an Italian household (or half of one).

ahhhhh! I remember that when my grandmother used to make it! I didnt know how to spell it or if anyone had ever heard of it before! I used to call it Pizza Fleet! :rotfl:

I used to put butter and ome jelly on mine! But I was kid- what did I know?!

IT WAS GOOD! :goodvibes

Here I am and I was talking about exactly what Mrs. New York is eating. Thanks for posting the pic! I didn't realize it was really only a north east thing.

Here on Long Island they are referred to as zeppoli's. You can find them at any Italian feast or most pizzerias. When made fresh, they are good.
I wonder if that was what we had as an appetizer in Florence this year??
They were served on the house, so I never saw the name of them, but they were AMAZING..about the size of a donut hole, but kinda square, crispy on the outside, and like a cloud inside! :cloud9:

I posted on another thread about a book on New England seafood I'm reading. I think the fried dough in RI is called a Doughboy. I was a little turned off when this thread started but now I want to try some fried dough.

Yep, doughboys in RI. They sell them at the ballpark in Pawtucket, RI where hubby and I have season tickets.

Fried dough is delish! You can come to Maine and get some this weekend at either the Cumberland Fair or the Fryburg Fair. I think it is much tastier and greasier than a funnel cake. Calories anyone??

Hm...I'm pretty sure theyre called elephant ears here in Indiana...unless i'm thinking of something else. it's just dough deep fried and its kinda flat, usually has sugar and cinnamon on it, and they are huge!

Hi Cookie Princess! My son was just at the Cumberland Fair today with his first grade class! lol :goodvibes

I usually get it at Old Ochard Beach once per year...SO delish and SO fattening and such a mess! :goodvibes ...It is best with a ton of melted butter and LOTS of powdered sugar....mmmmm can't wait till next summer...

called elephant ears or fried dough here in Ohio too, but I don't recall seeing them anywhere at Disney. :( Here in Ohio they are made several different ways, flat and crispy, thicker and more like dough (my fav), like donut holes, etc.

The Canadian pavilion had a place selling their version of fried dough and they called it beaver tails. My son had one a couple of years ago and as soon as we walked away a seagull came and took it right out of his hand. I went back to buy another one and the CM gave it to me for free after she heard what happened. I think they had toppings for them too. (chocolate or fruit). We're italian so we call it zeppolis and they are more like fried dough balls. These resembled a beavers tail! You might want to try there! ;)

That is funny, and quite a coincidence. We were hoping to go today as it is the last day of that fair, but I don't think our schedule will allow it. I guess we will have to head for the Fryburg Fair instead. I like my fried dough with butter and cinnamon sugar...nice and greasy. Don't forget to bring the Rolaids!

Yummy! Yes they do! I only got an order of 3- just to see what all the fuss was about-- they were worth the try! :thumbsup2

No more beavertails in the Canada pavilion anymore, unfortunately. :(

YUM! That's how I like mine too. I have to make it at home now since I live in the South and nobody knows about fried dough here, but I was born and raised in Hew Enland so I LOVE it!
