Where Are Your Favorite Places To Dine, And To Snack At Dl. And At DCA?

I agree. CC is a good place to sit while a parade is happening. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like between 2000 and 2007, the menu choices at CC have changed a little bit. I seem to recall different menu items a while back from what they have now. I DO love that meat loaf stack - that is good stick-to-your-ribs food but I cannot eat it if I have had a big breakfast, like at Goofy's. I have to make that meat loaf the primary meal of the day or it sits like a lump in my stomach!

You mean to tell me that the gigantic, jaw dropping bowl of dessert is not the banana split? What in the world is it?! It is huge. I literally could not believe that only two people were sharing it when it was brought to their table and they didn't even get halfway through it. It was too much.

My dh loves the meatloaf, too, but he has to take indigestion meds beforehand so it doesn't sit heavy, etc.! I love the Turkey sandwich myself, but I like it on a croissant-they always change the bread for me-that with the salad is great & doesn't hurt the stomach! Now, of course, if you follow it up with a banana split the stomach problems can occur! lol

Another favorite restaurant of dh's is the Plaza Inn for the fried chicken. They also used to have the chicken in New Orleans, but they don't anymore. We went to the French Market last week, and realized that they've changed things a bit and don't have the chicken. They have a different kind of chicken now-not fried, but roasted or something. We left and went to Plaza Inn, so didn't get to try it-dh was set on fried chicken.

Thank you everyone for your reviews, I appreciate them, and they are very tasty as well. Except for the HFCS, and anything that has to do with corn syrup, Bumbershoot, if you happen to read this post, would you happen to have a list of foods, or to that effect that is served at DL and maybe DCA as well, that does not contain any of the above? I would greatly appreciate it, and I am sure other people would too.
I do eat or drink some food and beverages that contain such ingredients, I really am attempting to limit greatly what I do consume that has those ingredients, it is not easy either, for it is in my chocolate milk, ketchup, cereal, and my ghram crackers, OMG! even my ghrams contain that yucky ingredient! it is getting to the point to where one can almost eat nothing anymore, I would like to know why do these ingredients even have to be in any of the before mentioned foods!? not to mention so many other foods as well?!(great big sigh, and not a good one either!)

and don't forget MSG.... yikes!

The best way I have found to try and limit the HFCS and other icky stuff is by going with organic products. I realize that even those can be misleading and difficult to navigate (how were they rated as "organic" ... which boards goverened it, etc) HOWEVER.. most of the time they contain ingredients like "organic cane juice" etc. I also realize that cane juice is not the greatest form of sugar (still processed..etc, etc) but it's not HFCS and that's good, right!

Organics are not inexpensive and sometimes they're not as fresh for as long and sometimes they're downright ICKY tasting compared to what we're used to but they have been helpful in keeping us away from things like HFCS and MSG.

Just my 2 cents. :flower3:

Well, when at DLR we try to eat real foods, rather than packaged. Uncrustables are right out b/c they have both c.s and hfcs, so if we want PB&J we bring in a sandwich. We bring granola bars for snacking, and since May we keep a hefty bit of budget for the fruit, the marvelous fruit, they sell at DLR. Not organic but incredible!

The chocolate covered banana was safe for my son. We didn't go to Haagen Dasz in DTD, but if we had I'm sure they would have had some safe flavors. Their store-bought pints are mainly, but not always, safe, and when I emailed the company they said the store would have ingredient lists I could read.

We won't even touch the ice cream inside the parks now. :( We've had it twice. Once before we had figured out the problem at all, but I *definitely* remember a massive tantrum after eating ice cream on Main Street (we figured it was b/c he was 2 and we were getting ready to leave the park and he was tired, but we've since learned that "normal" tantrums are much much different than corn syrup product tantrums). The last time was in September, and we had only figured it out in July and I wasn't reading Every Single Ingredient in things yet.

No soda, obviously, until they get Thomas Kemper products, as they are now flavored with cane juice.

Their cookies seem to be OK, even though the vanilla might have the evil ingredients. Most vanillas, it seems, have either c.s. or hfcs in them. Regardless, DS doesn't react with the chocolate chip cookies, and thank goodness, b/c he has to bypass SO much fun stuff there that I would hate it if he couldn't have a cookie!

No syrups at breakfast of course, but powdered sugar on pancakes/waffles is fine for him. Thankfully it's not an overall corn problem, as powdered sugar is "cut" with cornstarch in minute quantities. DS doesn't have a problem, but the daughters of a friend of a friend can't have ANY corn, and even that amount of cornstarch causes them to react.

Anything I haven't mentioned is b/c I haven't had it (we are vegetarian) or it has one or more of the "big 3" as I call them. Anything with marshmallows, obviously, it out b/c of both reasons. We went camping the other weekend and lamented s'mores, but marshmallows ARE corn syrup and gelatin, there's no getting around it, LOL. And as you mentioned, the graham crackers, russa frussa grumble grumble....

I want to be clear, though. This isn't a general "for our health" avoidance of these products. My son *attacks* when he has them. He had a DumDum at a festival, and attacked me 20 minutes later, screaming and clawing at my face, hitting and kicking me. That was my "aha" moment, once we got home (I had to carry him home and he passed out on my shoulder halfway home in the late July heat) and I posted about it and thought about it.

The "big 3" are poisons to him. Disneyland has been a good learning experience for me, to find out what all it's in and that I can trust nothing. When he ran around in circles outside of Adventureland, not caring if he knocked into people, not listening, not hearing, and definitely not obeying me, when we got home I looked up Dole Whips, which we had just had, and it has c.s. solids in it (the edit of the ingredient list on wikipedia is from me). Meanwhile during that, hubby had all but passed out on a bench, which at the time I thought (rudely) was b/c he was lazy and such, but we have since determined that those three ingredients cause a blood sugar weirdness that causes him to fall asleep.

Both of them can have normal sugar without a problem. I bake quite often, from scratch, and they can eat large quantities of chocolate cake with chocolate icing without a problem at all. It's the stuff related to corn syrup that does them in.

Most people just avoid them b/c of health reasons. For us we *have to* avoid them. Well, to be honest, I don't. But it just doesn't feel right to sneak away from the family just so I can have a Mickey bar, so I eat like they eat almost all of the time. :upsidedow

I might have to try some indigestion meds for the next meat loaf stack at CC! They do not have a real extensive menu - very limited number of items - but it's all good. The only thing I have heard a bad review on was the pot pie - my friend ate it and she was green the rest of the day ! I have had the famous fried chicken - and I THINK it was at Plaza Inn. It was good and it was a pretty good portion size too, as I recall. The last couple of times we have gone, we skipped some of the places with good food like River Belle Terrace and Plaza Inn - because my travel companions were not enthused about getting the tray and finding a table, etc. They wanted to be served! I have to check out that new menu for French Market and see if there is anything that looks appealing to me. There has to be something good on there!

May I just echo your sentiment about the fruit at DLR...it IS marvelous! I thought I was the only one who noticed this, because DLR in general, to non-Disney lovers, gets a bad rap for their food. When you try to tell 'an outsider' that there is some really good and tasty food to be found at DLR (and the range from healthy to complete junk is pretty vast), they scoff at you. I don't know what they do to their fruit in the 'Disney-fication process' - they sprinkle it with Pixie Dust, I suppose - but the pineapple and melon are heavenly! The pineapple spears sold in the parks are not cheap, but are SO yummy! A friend of mine who just went to DLR two weeks ago said she ate at Goofy's for the first time - which always has great food - and she was amazed at how good the fruit was. She said the melon and pineapple were some of the best she had ever tasted. Maybe things just taste better in Disneyland. I never go to Starbucks or anything like that but when I am at DLR, suddenly I have to get a blended mocha. It is a treat I could get at any coffee place, but I make it a special 'Disney treat.'

Sherry E, yep. :) We never, in normal life, eat conventionally grown grapes or strawberries, but at DLR we do. The goodness of the taste is worth it.

And if you haven't downed nearly frozen grapes while in the hot hot sun of ToonTown, well, you're missing out.:goodvibes

I have a grandson that loves candy, pop, etc. He is like your son --a whole new person about 10-15 mins after he eats those goodies. I did find out his is not the sugars but some of the dyes they use for coloring. (He can drink a clear soda but not one with coloring). He should out grow his but until then retraining with dried fruits-- fruit juices with soda water instead of soda drinks, has worked out ok. Thank you for sharing.

Happy planning

Patty

I always think the fruit is good because it's grown right there in CA lol. I always think of that state having really good fruit.

Thank you Bumbershoot, for your posts, especially the HFCS one, and don't worry, it was not a novel, but if it had been, I would be reading it. :) :flower3:
Your information is very helpful, and interesting as well, and I wish your son and you and your family, the best of health and wellness.
I remember your referencing in past posts too, about your sons reaction to certain ingredients, I thought wow,it is good that you were able to figure out the culprits.
I am not sure how bad any corn syrup product may be in comparison to HFCS however I have a major hunch that between the two, it is HFCS that is the worst. It sure would be nice if food manufacturers could leave those ingredients out, for I don't doubt that we all would be better off without them.
Your poor husband, done in by the "three C's" :( I can see it now, wake up! our son is disturbing the peace! wake up, then he finally does, only to attempt to figure out, what on earth happened to him. (sigh)
I know that if I consume too much sugar, be it just that, or the HFCS etc. I get a bit squirrelly, and then some.

I have not downed nearly frozen grapes in the hot sun of ToonTown, but I tell you, there have been times - IN ToonTown - where I feel like I need to down something!! I love kids but sometimes it can get a little crazy in there! Since I like the melon and pineapple so much, I can only imagine that the grapes and strawberries are just as tasty, so next time I might have to grab those!

My friends actually thought the Mickey ice cream bars (not the sandwiches but the bars) were TOO frozen and hard. But I imagine they have to be, because if they are pulled out of the freezer cart only mildy frozen on a SUPER hot day, they will be liquid in no time. At least if they are really solid at first, then it will take them a few minutes before they melt.

Don't you live in California, Heather? For some reason, I thought you did. I guess I am wrong. I think it is a mental thing for me. I live in SoCal, and if I go into my local Ralphs supermarket - or Vons - and get pineapple, it never tastes as good as it seems to taste in DL. I think I have just convinced myself that it tastes better at DLR. But in general, we have good produce out here in CA!

I lived in Vegas for a short time and all the grocery stores there had 10x better fruit than anyplace I've ever lived (Ca included). I wonder if it's because they truck in such massive amounts for the hotels? Dunno.. maybe has nothing to do with that. LOL

Even in the hospital when I had my daughter.. the fresh fruit plate was OUTSTANDING! Go sunrise med center, VEGAS BABY! :cheer2:

P.S. BTW... at Costco I've been buying "Dole Hawaiian Gold" pineapple. It is WAY better than regular canned pineapple.. I mean WAY better. Let me know if you try it!

I have also been told by many people that Vegas has the best bacon around too! I cannot recall if I ate bacon the last time I was in Vegas - it is one of those things that I love when I eat it but cannot eat on a regular basis. I do eat bacon at Goofy's Kitchen and always notice that it is really flavorful and good.

Ah, nice tasty additions. :) thank you.

Anyone else?..................

Umm... you're so cute.. it makes me want to post reviews of other places' food to make you a happy post reader! :lmao:

I don't have pics of Taste Pilots Grill but we ate there.

FROM MY TR:
The burgers here were Ok. I had the steak sauce one which came with blue cheese and cold A-1 which quickly cooled off my patty making me wonder if it was cooked. The Onion rings were REALLY good. I thought that the burgers were ala carte so I ordered a bunch of fries and the CM told me that they came with fries... I was glad she did cause that would have been a big waste of money... I was impressed with her thoughtful thinking

I will say that I thought the food amount/price ratio was very good. The girls and DH enjoyed their food just fine. He had the chicken sand and they had plain (with fixin's bar), hot burgers. We ordered to go and sat down at the "round" and ate our dinner while waiting for the MSEP. LOVED IT!

Now that my DD's are getting older I think I will take some more time to explore the non-park (AKA FOOD!) attractions at DLR next time.

It's going to be fun to go back over the next few years due to the fact that DCA Is going to be a "new" park every time! Unfortunately, our next trip (DH and I... DD"s will go probably every summer with other family... BUMS!) won't be for a couple of years but.... that should give them time to sparkle up the new lands and magic over at DCA. :wizard:

Thank you Travel Mel, you are cute too, and humorous as well! :)
I would have asked them to please reheat (not microwave) my hamburger, no one likes a cold hamburger, they are not any fun.

How did you like the French fries? do they have a tasty seasoning? or are they rather pedestrian? (he he, pedestrian fries ;) )
