This is our first trip to DL we are avid wdw'ers, Therefore with being used to epcot and all the resort dining at wdw, I am having trouble planning on where to dine. We love rainforest cafe but are looking for unique to DLR dining options. Oh and no POTC in Oct. so I am guessing that one is out. Thanks for any tips.

Ariel's Grotto at the PP CA is cool. Do it at dinner time when the boardwalk is lit up. You can make reservations ahead here. Also at DL you can eat at the River Belle Terrace it lets you look out at the Rivers of America. They serve Mickey Mouse pancakes here for breakfast. Also fun foods for kids for lunch and dinner. Mickey shaped PBandJ. Stinks about Pirates! pirate:

I love most places at DL-

For Burgers I like Buzz (their spicy chicken is great)
For Pasta- PLAZA INN or R2P2 (Redd Rocketts)
For Sandwiches- French Market (French Dip was amazing!) or Carnation Cafe
For Mexican- Rancho whatjamacallet in Frontierland

The only place I dont like is Village Haus in Fantasyland

In DCA-

For Burgers- Taste Pilots
For Pasta/Pizza- Pizza Owhatevr
For nachos- Cochina Cucghamfi8Dfh in Pacific Wharf

If you are used to WDW, you may find the Disneyland offerings a little less varied but don't despair. In my family's opinion the food is just as good or even a little bit better at Disneyland and we never feel hungry or jipped in the eats department! Also, the fact that both parks and Downtown Disney are right together makes skipping around to eat so easy that you do end up getting a lot of variety. When you call the dining number to make your ps' they can either forward you or give you the number to any places in DTD where you want to eat.

Ariel's Grotto in California Adventure is now called Cap'n Mickey's. Ariel isn't there anymore but the menu and atmosphere was the same when we ate there in December. I agree with the other poster, we love to go there in the evenings and sit outside enjoying the lights and sounds of Paradise Pier. We always work our reservation time so that we then just head over to get a spot for the Electrical Parade to cap off the evening. We also love Taste Pilots Grill at DCA and never miss eating there, in fact, we haven't tried any other counter service places over there in quite awhile. They also have ribs and chicken sandwiches in addition to the burgers.

In Disneyland the counter service options are plentiful. My family loves Rancho del Zocalo. They serve Mexican food and it is located right there in Frontierland by Big Thunder Mountain. Huge portions by the way. We also love Riverbelle Terrace for those Mickey pancakes. Frequently on a Saturday morning we will get to the parks early, ride for a couple of hours then take a break for pancakes and enjoy looking out at the river. For pizza/pasta we like Redd Rockets Pizza Port in Tomorrowland. The chicken alfredo is also huge. We can generally get that and one of their enormous slices of pizza and maybe an order of breakdsticks and our family of four (kids are 8 and 10) will leave stuffed. I have always found the pizza at WDW to be completely inedible, Disneyland's version is sooo much better.

Our hands down favorite restuarant at Disneyland is Goofy's Kitchen in the Disneyland Hotel. We like this better than Chef Mickey's in WDW because the food is better (in our opinion) and there are more characters. In addition to Goofy, Minnie, Chip and Dale you will probably see a princess or two plus an additional character such as Genie or Captain Hook. We have enjoyed both breakfast and dinner there many times. I think because Disneyland does not have as many character buffets/meals the ones they do have really offer a lot of different characters. Their are some really great offerings in the Grand Calfornian including a Chip and Dale breakfast and Napa Rose which is a 5 star restaurant.

Too bad about POTC, if they do happen to have that open, defintiely try the Blue Bayou, if not, you'll just have to return to Disneyland to try it out another time!

We have a few favorites. I like Rancho Zocalo (but, I'm partial to Mex food). I like the French Market in New Orleans - the food is pretty decent & it's a nice place to sit down & eat outdoors. My daughter likes Hungry Bear, but the food is "okay" in my opinion. I think the draw for her is sitting next to the river & watching the ducks. I like Plaza Inn - big portions. Blue Bayou is good for lunch. Pizza Port has a good salad & decent pasta.

We also like Storytellers Cafe. Hook's Pointe is good, too, but expensive.

In DCA we like the Pacific Wharf - you can get salads or soup in a bread bowl or Mex food that is pretty tasty -- eat outdoors here.

I'm curios about the French Market....is it counter service style or restaurant style?

Thanks :)

My favorite subject...

#1 favorite restaurant in Disneyland is Rancho Del Zocalo - was better when it was Casa Mexicana, but it's still great in this incarnation. I always try and eat there twice a trip at least.

#2 favorite restaurant is Pizza Port - It's always crowded and the atmosphere sucks, but the Chicken Fusseli is to die for.

#3 favorite restaurant is Plaza Inn - Their chicken dinner is an excellent deal. three pieces of chicken, mashed potatos and green beans...almost too much to eat and well worth the price.

#4 favorite restaurant is French Market - Ate there for the first time in eons last weekend and absolute loved it. Their menu is great and the French Dip I had was really tasty. Will definately eat there again soon.

Favorite restaurant in DCA - The burger place next to Soarin over California. Surprisingly very good and not your average burger. They also have good barbeque here.

The French Market is a counter service restaurant, but not in the same way as Pizza Port or Plaza Inn, where you go to the specific area you are interested in and get your food, then make your way to the register. At French Market and River Bell Terrace you wait in one line, which takes you past the food, you get your food while you are in the line and the line ends at the register where you pay. Old fashioned Disneyland counter service restaurants. Before they built Pizza Port and Rancho del Zocalo.

A trip to DL just isn't the same without an order of Jambalaya from the French Market! Especially when the jazz band is playing.

Another vote for Storyteller's Cafe. The corn chowder is out of this world!! I also like Hook's Pointe too.

In Downtown Disney, I've been to Naples a couple of times and liked that a lot. Prices aren't too bad there.

I don't think you'll have any problem finding lots of great places to eat at DLR. The last time we stayed onsite, a couple of years ago, we were amazed that just about EVERYTHING we ate, counter or table service, was quite good! The only place that kind of turned me off was ESPN - mainly because of the service, and the food was just "okay." But the portions were huge.

For a quick breakfast, you might want to try La Brea Bakery in DD, or the snack place in GC (I keep forgetting the name -- I want to say Whitewater Snacks, but sometimes I get confused with WL at WDW!). Also, there's a place in New Orleans Square in DL that sells apple fritters which are great when they're nice and hot! We like the mint juleps there too.

DD's favorite is Storyteller's Cafe - she loves the buffet; I can make a meal out of 2 appetizers!

DCA - Wine Country Trattoria has great sandwiches and yummy desserts. Ask for a outside seat next to the wall and you'll have a great view of the Electrical Parade!

DCA - Pacific Wharf cafe has Boudin's clam chowder in bread bowls (true San Francisco chowder!)

DCA - Taste Pilot's has consistently good hamburgers and salads.

Okay, but don't forget about dessert! For the BEST ice cream anywhere in DL/DCA go to Burrbank Ice Cream (in the train) at DCA. It is real ice cream (not fozen whipped stuff) and the strawberry is to die for!!! Yum Yum!!!
There is also real ice cream at DL. on Main Street on the left when facing the castle, next to the bakery and restaurant I always like and can't remember the name of.

Enjoy life and great vacations!
Chris

ARIEL'S GROTTO!!! This is absolutely our happiest memory of DL. Our DD8 was in heaven with so much attention from Ariel. We thought the food was good, the pearl sundaes were yummy, and the signed beach buckets were precious. It was very worth the money. :flower:

We like the soup in a bread bowl at the Boudin bakery :) The kids like the gigantic corndogs near Golden Dreams. We all like the soft serve between Ariels Grotto and the Pier (I scream???).

Oh, for something light and filling, I like the chicken salad at the place next to Soarin.
