When you sneeze, do you look at the light?

Okay, weird question here... when I have to sneeze, and it just won't ... come out ... I look at light. A lamp, the sun, whatever...and it helps! My sneeze decides to come out!!

Now, why would looking at a light help this?? Does anyone know?

Hmmmm..... one of those odd things. I figured, if anyone knew, someone here would. :teeth:

My mom always sneezes when she looks at the sun. She always thought it was because it caused her face to scrunch up when she squinted her eyes, which in turn would sort of scrunch up her sinuses and irritate them. And then it would cause a sneeze. That's just Mom's theory though. Who knows what really causes it.;)

I've heard that the lining in your nose and eyes are the same and that when the lining on your eyes gets irritated, so does the one in your nose, making it easier for you to sneeze! ::yes::

I can't vouch for the light thing but all I know is that if someone talks to me while I'm sneezing it interrupts me and I can't sneeze. Guess I'll have to try the light thing. I hate when that happens.

I always sneeze in the sun too! I also have light sensitive eyes!

I was told that it's similar to a sun allergy...not sure about that.. once I have one sneeze I'm ok!

YES! YES! YES! lol I thought I was the only one! heehee!! I've seen the light!

I feel a sneeze coming now let me try it , oh yea it worked!!!:earseek:

DH does this and thought everyone did it. . .I don't do it and never heard of anyone doing it until he did it with me!

:wave2:

never really thought about it. I guess i might need to try and see, but then right now, when I sneeze its a major underetaking,, start feeeling sneeze,, grab eye and press, hold till finished even thrugh the pain of eye feeling like some one is ripping it out of the head. Amazing what 2 little tiny pieces of skin and muscle can do:) Gees I really miss eye lids:) Of course right now I can accomplish some thing few other humans can do, and no normal human at that:) I sneeze with my eye open:)

Oh gads, I thought I was the ONLY one who did this.

I describe it differently though...it feels to me like I'm sneezing FROM the sun. Sunshine can cause me to sneeze......

not only that but I get the same sensation when I eat sweets...usually chocolate or the sugar in my coffee.

Weird weird weird........

(clearing throat) Woohoo, Tag Fairy!!!

I don't know about any of that, but now I have the urge to sneeze. :p

It is called photosternutatory reflex. It is a real reflex a lot of people have. Generally believed to be inherited.

Froggy...hope you don't mind my asking, but, will you be getting eye lids again, or no?

I've tried sneezing with my eyes open, and I just can't...yep impossible.

I happens to me too... but has anyone ever heard of this old wives tale-- if you DON'T want to sneeze, say "grapefruit" repetitively until the urge goes away.... It works!!

If I have a sneeze that won't come out, I look at a light or the sun & that does the trick.

DS sneezes every time he goes out into the sunlight.
