We just saw a school bus picking up kids and we had a "jinx buy me a coke" moment because we said at the same time "Awwww, poor kids!"

We realize that when we think of school it is more yucky memories than happy ones.

When you see a school bus do you feel all warm and fuzzy, or do you feel like rescuing the kids on it? ;)

It depends.

I liked my last 2 years of High school. But the first 2 years of High school.:scared:

when I see what my kids have to go though compared to what school was like when I was a kid, I feel so sorry for my kids.

Whats sad is both of my kids really like school and do really well. If they had been kids when I was in school, they would have thrived and really loved it.

Instead I see them as being bogged down with things like uniforms, state testing, school safety issues like bomb threats and terrorist attacks and fundraising.

I just don't think they were the best years of my life. I was much happier in college and on. Not just "much" happier, leaps and bounds happier.

I hope the little sweeties on those buses are happy to be on them and have a great day at school!

I kinda used to but last week I went on geography fieldclass with some 9th graders to the beach and the three girls I got reminded me of myself and my two best friends - it was uncanny! I just remembered all the fun we had, how everything at school seemed so, so important and wishing it was like that now! :goodvibes

I didn't have the safety issues but I went to Catholic school, so I had to deal with uniforms, texting, and lots of fundraising.
That just seems normal to me.:confused3

I think my happiest memories are of the Halloween parties, Christmas parties, birthday cupcakes and such. All the stuff you can't do anymore!

I'm not saying that they have a place in public schools anymore, I'm just saying I loved them!

First of all, I didn't ride a school bus as a child. At that time the only kids who rode the school bus were special needs students. Everyone else used public transportation(bus or subway) walked or their parents dropped them off.

Now, some schools (charter, private, Catholic) contract school bus services with various companies. Most public schools still only provide bus service for special needs students.

I'll be 40 in January. I attended both Catholic schools and public schools. I took standardized tests at least twice a year from 1st-12th grade. We took them in the fall and then again in the spring.

Once I hit high school, we had to take regents exams(Algebra, geometry, trig, Spanish, history, biology, chemistry, English) as well as the regular math and reading exams. Again, the math and reading exams were taken every fall and spring. The regent exams were taken in January and June.

The only difference is that funding was not tied to the test results.

Well I feel sorry for them having to ride the bus. Unless it's for something like a band trip. Then it's fun. I rather enjoyed high school. The other grades I could take or leave, but I had way more fun in hs than college.

I walked to school so didnt have to deal with a bus.

I agree with your post, but I do think all those events should still have a place in public school.

I loved school, and so do my kids. They never complain about going.

DD gets car sick sometimes, so she complains about the bus. I wish I could pick her up every day and bring her to day care.

I never took a school bus, either. I just hope they're enjoying these years just like I did. I loved school and am so glad my son does, too.

It just reminds me of field trips. We didn't have busing, so everytime we were one a school bus was either a field trip(fun) or when I played sports in High School(also fun).

We didn't have busing either so maybe I'm missing out on some kind of high school horror?

I walked to and from school alone or with friends for 7 years throughout high school. It was only 1.5 miles each way but it was ALL up-hill on the way home which used to be a killer in the summer.

I loved school and DS6 and DD3.5 both love school too.

DS goes to a very small (one class per grade) public school that has a great open-door policy. The teachers, administrators, and staff are great! We do have a Halloween Party, Holiday Party, and Valentine's Day Party. No uniforms or safety issues. Some fundraising, but it mostly pays for the really great enrichment programs.

My kids are actually the kind who love doing homework. DS actually asks for more challenging work when it's too easy. :rotfl2:

Our school does have TOO MUCH TESTING. For third through fifth grade, the state tests can take up to 20 hours in the month of March alone. Think of all the wonderful things the kids could be learning with even half of that time. :confused3 The teachers also do testing at the beginning and end of the year to see where each child is at academically.

As far as the school bus itself, I get warm, fuzzy feelings. BUT...my grandparents are school bus owners/drivers. They have been doing it for almost 50 years. I started riding the bus when I was two, because my grandmother watched me while my parents worked. I grew up on the school bus. When my sister and I started school, we just happened to live on my grandmother's bus route. There were some days I wished we were on someone else's route, because she did not let us get away with anything!! ;)

When I go back to visit and my grandmother has to pick up kids from school, I will always go with her. Honestly, now, I feel bad for the bus drivers. They are not allowed to have any authority over the kids anymore. It's complete chaos. The kids know if the driver yells at them or says anything to them, their parents will file a complaint. My grandparents now have video cameras installed on all of their buses, because of the fights and vandalism doen to their buses. It's really sad. Alot of kids have no sense of respect anymore. :sad2:

I have very fond memories of elementary school, only.
When I see a school bus, it doesn't really do anything for me. I just make sure to stop, till the red flashing lights go off. I also see the way the kids in the back of the bus are either standing up against the emergency door, are sticking out their tongues or waving at me or are hitting each other. I am thankful that my husband and I always drove our kids to school.

I thought it was up hill BOTH ways??? Wasn't that a killer on snow days, too??:lmao: :lmao:

In all seriousness, I wasn't a big fan of high school...I enjoyed college a lo more...felt like it was the start of the rest of my life. Looking back, I do miss the fact that I didn't have to worry about the mortgage payment, bills, etc. In that respect, I miss the school bus days, but socially, nope, don't miss it at all.
