When you go to the vet, do they help you lift your dog onto the table?

Yes, your vet is a jerk and you should look for a new one.

My vet is a strange guy, but good with animals so we keep seeing him.
I have an 80 lb lab/ret/shepard mix dog and a 55 lb shepard mix dog. No way could I lift them onto a table. Our vet always gets down to their level to examine them. I did go to a vet where the tables lowered and raised for examining. The only one we're required to lift is the cat.

My comment regarding a vet that handled larger breeds, more had to do with the OP's inability to lift the dog. Finding a vet that was willing to do all the lifting is more than an acceptable answer. But I still can't fault the vet for setting a rule about owners lifting their own dogs in non urgent situations. But I think there should be a posted sign indicating this is the policy. So the owners would be forwarned. A vet that has this as a policy may find he loses a bit of business. But perhaps the loss of business is mitigated by decreased workman's comp premiums. Who knows.

Yep, I agree.

Even I was told I'd have to pay a large-breed surcharge (to help pay for a hydraulic table, etc.), I'd understand. Chloe's huge. I love her, but other people may cringe when they see her lumbering in.

THe roll eyes thing is unbelievable - totally unprofessional. If my pets vet rolled their eyes at me, I would be getting a new vet - pronto. That behavior is disrespectful.

Me too, and I have said something and walked out before. Not with a vet, but with an optometrist (over my daughter - not my dog). Actually I pitched a fit, then walked out. Then I wrote a letter... then, I walked into a restaurant a few weeks later and he was seated at the table next to me. Not cool.

I know just how the OP feels. Never...not once, has the Vet ever offered to help me life my dog up on the table. :sad2: You can see what a rough time I have.

Oh, my back's breaking for you! :lmao:

I know it is kind of a strange question, LOL.

We have a couple dogs, the largest one being about 70 pounds. Usually when he has to go to the vet my husband takes him but this time I had to take him.

When the vet asked me to lift him onto the table for examination, I just couldn't do it. I struggled and hoisted and did my best but I guess I just don't do well with 70 pounds of resistence.

Finally, I asked him if he could help me and he said, "You shouldn't have a dog that you can't lift on your own." So I got frustrated and said, "Well then I guess we'll have to reschedule the appointment." Then he rolled his eyes and helped me lift up the dog.

Is this normal or is this vet a jerk?

My dog is only 17 pounds so I don't have this problem, but your vet seems like a real jerk...I would find a new one. This comment was completely uncalled for.

One of our dogs is an 85-lb. Golden retriever. No way I could pick him up! Our vet has stainless steel tables at floor level that are also scales. I just tell him to stand on the platform, they take his weight, and then the platform automatically raises up to the level that he wants for the exam. Easy!

I think your vet is a jerk. We have a Great Dane and I don't think that there are many people out there that could lift a 150 lb. dog all by themselves. Our vet always examines him on the floor and everytime they've needed to do something that required him to be held down or something (nothing major, I'm talking taking the temperature or something like that) there's been a vet tech in the room to assist.

I would look for a new vet if I were you.
