there to break up the trip, do you leave your luggage in the car, or take it all into the hotel? We are splitting our drive and staying over in SC for a night, should we leave the stuff in the car and self park (so valet doesn't have our keys) or should we take it all in and valet park? What does everyone else do?

When we drive down, we pack a separate "carry on" bag. (hmm....maybe we should call it a carry in) We have just what we need for the hotel stay...toiletries, sleeping clothes, change of clothes for the next day, etc. That way we don't have to drag all of our bags into the hotel. Then before we leave Disney, we repack the bag for the way home.

When we drive down we have an over night bag that we take in with us the rest stays in the van. Then when we park we either park under a light that we can see from our window of the hotel or we park under a light that is visible from the front desk. Watch the areas that you are staying in if they are mostly newer hotels stay there other wise go on to the next place. My father was one that would just take the first hotel he could fine. I learned my lesson to never do that.

We also pack an overnight bag to bring in. Since we are only there to sleep for a while I never spend the $$ to stay at a place that has valet so I guess you could say we self park. I just make sure not to leave anything visible in the car.

Well, I stay in the cheap places on the way down and back. I bring in the one bag and the electronics bag (laptop, camera, cell phone, navigation, XM.) Everything else is locked in the back of the truck. My last camping trip I had a utility trailer that was hitched to my truck, and the hitch was secured with a lock, but had an open top. Everything was just covered with a tarp and tiedowns. It wasn't bothered in either direction.

To be honest, if you are staying in a place that has valet parking, I would valet and leave the stuff in there. To me, that seems more secure than open parking that just anybody can get to.

In a case like that, we would just carry our overnight stuff--toiletries and a change of clothes.

Add us to the overnight bag, self park camp! We bring in an overnight bag, toiletries, all electronics and of course anything of value at all. Luggage is usually just clothing and such anyway.

We usually park as close to the front entrace as we can in a well light area and don't leave anything visable. Of course our Delaware plates just scream tourist :)

I used to carry an overnight bag into the hotel and leave the other luggage in the car until... We were in Montreal for a softball tournament in 2003 and another team staying at the same hotel as us had the entire teams equipment stolen from a locked truck. It was horrible, the girls batbags were gone, bats, gloves, helmets, catchers equipment everything. We actually played them later that day and shared our gear with them, really sad they were playing in their sneakers because their cleats were gone also.
Since then I've always brought everthing into the room.

We've only driven once, but we take all our bags in to the hotel with us. I did pack everything we needed for that night in a separate bag, so we only had to get into one bag. We have a minivan, so the luggage would be visible, and it's just not worth it to me to provide temptation for anyone to take it and have our vacation ruined.

Just the question of worrying about the luggage, tells me that one should bring it in. A valet seems safe but will they guarantee your items are not taken?

We also pack a seperate overnight bag. There is no way I'm dragging all that luggage up the room for one night! We put everything we need in that one bag and keep it within easy reach when we need it. The rest stays in the car. We've had no problems with break ins or anything. We make sure to stay in nicer areas and in well lit parking lots too.

since we have a car this time with a trunk, we won't worry at all about it, before we took the land rover, thoes are hi profile car anyways and you could see all the lugage in the, so we took it all in... PIA!!! 3 kids when we were all tired, and so much stuff to carry... this time and the time before when we took a car w/ trunk, so only took in 1-2 carry in bags, and then all electronics, lap top, dvd player, navigation thing, XM radio, ect, ect. LOL
Again we stay somewhere like ya know fairfield, days inn, holiday in, howard jonson, not really hilton ... so no valet parking!

We bring everything in. People like us might be thief magnets, but, I have a friend who had his vehicle broken into when he was staying somewhere overnight. He actually awakened to find the thieves actively breaking into the car. They trashed the inside of the vehicle, and stole several items, including a video game and built in CD player. He was at motel, and the car was parked right outside his door, and it was daylight at the time.
