When you bring a laptop computer on the plane

DH and I took a flight recently and a fellow across aisle was watching R rated movies. He had the earpiece in and the closed captioning on (?) and the little girl in front of us who was unaccompanied was watching the movie. The man noticed but didn't seem to care! I was appalled that someone could be so irresponsible in front of a child!

I also disagree - it's should be the parents responsibility to watch the child.

I try not to take mine unless I have work to do, that I couldn't finish in the office. I do lots of presentations to clients. I also write reviews for my staff since flying durring business hours is the only time I get to do this.

I also disagree with the above. I am appalled at how (some)parents in society today have "no control" over there young children.

I totally agree with your thoughts, bclydia. Some people are self-centered/selfish enough not to have a care about those around them, much less children. I suppose this clown might sit and read a Playboy/Penthouse magazine after he was finished with his movie. He can certainly do all those, movies or whatever, if he is not affecting those around him.

It is presumptuous to expect the parents of those kids to tell the kids not to look forward if the movie viewing passenger in in front of in view of them. Are they to tell the kid to look out the window for 2 hours or put a bag over their head? If you are in an office setting, you can't have just whatever you darn well please in your cube; you have a modicum of decorum to follow that is not impactive of those around you.

As far as doing this with kids around you, it is no different than if you took underaged kids to a R rated movie at a theater and sat them in the back row and told them to not watch the movie while you went up a few rows and watched it, telling them you'll be back when it is over. I swear, some people have no brains nor sense about themselves and only think of themselves. We see it so often today. Dumb!!!!!!!

I don't see how it is irresponsible to watch YOUR movie on YOUR laptop computer. If there is a child around to see it then the parents should switch seats with the child. Or if the child is unaccompanied, then the flight attendants (aren't they supposed to be keeping an eye on the kid) should move the child.

I swear, some people have no brains nor sense about themselves and only think of themselves. We see it so often today. Dumb!!!!!!!

I totally agree that there are lots of dumb and selfish people. I just think we disagree on who those people are...

Maybe I'm the only one who travels on crowded, cramped airlines, but isn't it pretty darn tough to see what's going on with the person in front of you, let alone figure out what's going on in a movie on a laptop?

More than likely, the only way for the precious darling to be able to see the screen clearly is if he or she is climbing all over the back of my seat. In that case I figure mom or dad ought to stop thinking it's cute and haul the little angel back into it's rightful place.

Sorry, but it ain't my kid, it ain't my problem. If and when I want to worry about a child, I'll have my own.

I personally haven't flown with my laptop in the past, but will be taking it with me when I go to WDW for my wedding. I don't think we will be using it on the plane, since they don't give you a laptop plug-in in the cheap seats, but my Fh may decide he wants to watch a DVD or something.

As for the R rated video watching. I do note that the child mentioned was unaccompanied and the flight attendant, who for the duration of the flight is essentially a babysitter, should have done something (either move the child or require the video watcher to take precautions. I also think that we as adults have an obligation to determine where it is appropriate to view certain things and I am not sure that in a plane with children in the area is the appropriate place.

Let's get past this and talk about what we do with our Laptops on flights, like the OP asked. As I said previously, I sometimes watch a movie, review photos, I have even written trip reports.

Do you only watch G rated movies? Bc according the responsibility police here on the DIS, that's really the only kind that would be acceptable if there are children around.

I hate to debate this point, but I, heaven forbid, mother of a 9 yo, have been known to watch an R rated movie on an airplane, and no, my 9 yo is not allowed to watch said movies. However, it is not my responsibility to make note of what anyone else is doing. Given the fact that many R rated movies are so rated for language, as opposed to sexual content or violence, w/o hearing the movie, the kid might not be exposed to anything s/he had not seen before. And BTW, I have seen men reading Maxim magazine on a plane, and they sell all kinds of X rated trash in the airport. It's really up to the parents to teach their kids a) good manners (not looking over someone's shoulder; that's called snooping in my house) and b) the discretion to know what is for adults and what is for kids, and when confronted with things that are adult only, to revert to point (a) and not look!!!

Actually, mcnuss the movies I like to watch are mostly Disney, and occasionally Willy Wonka and The Chocolate factury. But again, I usually do the book on tape thing to help me sleep on the plane. Movies that have lots of violence and sex tend to keep me awake. As far as bad language goes, I can do without that as well. If I even bring an R rated movie with me, it is generally in case we get stuck in the room, or planning to meet friends there.

That being said, If I were to turn an R rated movie on, I would make sure that the headphones were plugged in, and that there wasn't a good chance of a young kid watching over my shoulder. I try to be always very aware of my surroundings (I work retail and part of my job is security). All that people are saying is that it is inconsiderate (at the least) to view an objectionable movie in a way that a child can see it. I also have a problem with the magazines you mentioned; heck, even Cosmopolitan can be borderline pornographic. When people read these magazines, though, they don't sit and study the few naughty pictures (generally) The artcles are why people buy them, and they also don't have a parental rating on them.. You don't see people reading Playboy or Huslter in an airplane, and if you did (and there was a young child looking over your shoulder) I would think that it would be reasonable for the flight attendant to ask you to put it away.

Again, Reasonable actions are part of Civility. If there are only adults around you, far be it from me to stop you from watching your movie; As long as you have head phones on, I don't have to watch. If it was a Porno movie, and you were sitting next to someonel who was offended by it, then they have every right to ask to be moved, or to ask you to play a different movie.

When Traveling for business, I use my laptop to work on the presentation that i will be giving, write speeches etc and when i am done, then I take the opportunity to clean up my hard drive and delete so old stuff that I don't need..

If we are on vacation, then I use my laptop for uploading pictures so on the flight back, I am busy playing with the vacation photos.. Also, my laptop doesn't have a DVD drive, so no movies for me..

Since the child in question was unaccompanied, and if the material was so subversive that a child should not see it, then I think the poster who mentioned this incident had a responsibility to say something to the FA - and yes, that would be a quite resaonable course of action. But I think it's a leap to assume that the person watching the movie really did notice the child. I have to tell you that my DB, who is 30 something and childless, would not be aware that it's not ok for a kid to watch his R rated movie...I hate to say that out loud, but I am pretty sure it's true! But clearly that poster did notice, and did care about this, so where does his or her responsibility lie?

I also think there is a line to be drawn in these situations, and that lies somewhere between R rated and pornographic, don't you?

When my son was 6 he sat next to a man at the airport and watched him as he was messing around with his laptop.
My son in a not so quiet voice yells out, "you sure are slow on that computer". The man laughed and told my son he was a good observer. I was so embarrassed. My son then gave him some pointers on how to use a computer.

I would use my laptop to play games. You could always get on the dis and ask lots of questions to make the time go by faster.

Sounds like a good question to me.

DH uses the laptop to keep in touch with work. I use it to keep in touch with friends, IRL and Internet. And my kids use it to get homework assignments from classmates if we've taken them out of school for the trip. We also have used it to look up Disney or other info that we might want while on our trip, that we didn't research beforehand.

I would imagine a child could see a movie on a laptop diagonally across the aisle. Unless it was an outrageously inappropriate movie, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'd switch seats if I was aware of it, if I were really that concerned. No big deal. I DON'T think it's the responsibility of a flight attendant to be aware of what's boing on on somebody's laptop, unless they happen to notice, or are informed by someone.

There are all kinds of nasty, self-centered, irresponsible people in the world...sometimes, at best, it's a good opportunity to teach my children about what IS appropriate.

As far as a CD player...hhmmm...I'll have to think about that.
