When would free dining be announced?

We don't usually go in the summer/fall, so I haven't paid much attention to the details. When has it historically been announced? Did it happen last year? Any restrictions? Thanks for the help!

FD has generally been offered the beginning of April for stays the end of August to end of September. They already offered FD to guests who stayed during FD this year to return for FD during the same time frame in 2009 if they booked before they checked out.

If we book this month for August and free dining is later offered, is there a way to take advantage of it? We've never used the dining plan before and have a cruise scheduled in late August. We'd like to add a few days at WDW following the cruise. But we're kind of overwhelmed at the options right now....

Yes, you can modify to add free dining if and when it is released to the public. Just keep and eye out for that to be released. Last year free dining was released on 4/7 for Disney Visa holders and 4/10 for the general public.
