I get the same question almost daily from coworkers and from pharmaceutical reps who come into my office. Occasionally, even one of my patients will ask me if they have seen me for a long time and are particularly close. Some people have known me long enough to know that I haven't always been overweight. I gained about 60 lbs after my son was born. He is 9 now, so, about 9-10 years ago, I weighed about 115-120 lbs, which is my goal range now. I am able to maintain that weight, generally. After my son was born, I quit exercising and stopped being quite so careful with my diet, mainly because he was so picky, and I didn't want to routinely prepare more than one meal. So, I took the easy way out of eating food that was really too high calorie and fatty, like hot dogs, chicken nuggets, etc. Now, he is old enough to eat a variety of foods, and he knows I am not going to make something different for him. Sometimes, I will make some that is less spicy for him, but, he basically eats the same as we do. This has allowed me to be more successful this time (I have tried many times over the last 9 years to lose weight, and not to regain it, but didn't have long term success).
It is amusing that one of my coworkers made the comment that soon I would be getting Ashley's cast offs for clothes. This is funny to me because when I joined the practice, 15 years ago, she was one of our patients. She is now 24 years old. I don't think that really a 50 year old doctor should be dressing like a 24 yo. But, they are right--we probably wear close to the same size, and surely will when I reach my goal.
