We are traveling with American Airlines and lined up our own airfare and did not purchase Disney transfers. We are renting a car from the airport to get us to Cape Canaveral. When do we put on our Disney Luggage tags....we should probably wait until right before boarding....correct?

Put them on as you are putting them into your rental car. When you arrive at port, a porter will take your luggage from you. YOu'll need the tags on before you hand them over to the porter.

In virtually every case, you shouldn't put your cruise line luggage tags on until they will be handled be DCL for their next step. For example, if you:

-Book your own air, have purchased the DCL transfers, and are arriving day of the cruise: You'd put them on when you check in at your home airport, as DCL will claim them and transfer them to the ship (assuming you're arriving morning or early afternoon of your cruise.

-Book your own air, purchased the DCL transfers, but are arriving the night before: You'd claim your luggage at MCO and take it to wherever you're staying that night. You'd put them on the bags before you check in for the bus.

-Make your own arrangements to get to the port: As was noted above, you'd wait until before you hand them to the porters at the port.

I think this covers all eventualities. I don't think you can buy your air from the cruise line without the transfers. In any case, it should specify in your documents when to tag the luggage.
