When to book flight?

LOL......I just got my tax refund so I'm all over the transportation thread today

Our trip is Aug. 21st. When should I book my airfare. I have found some good rates on Delta now, but not sure if it's too early. What if we need to change our dates of travel?
When is the best time to book? It's still 6 months out, but I'm just very excited about this trip!

If you've found airfare at a price you can live with I would book it. I usually book 4-6 months out for the best airfare. Sometimes the closer it gets the airlines will run specials but I'm always afraid I'll get stuck with really expensive airfare. I'm going in August too and booked mine yesterday when SW opened their dates. Of course I wanted to go 8/11-8/25 but SW only opened to 8/24 , so we just changed our dates.

On Delta flights there is a class code letter, usually K, L, M, Q, T, or U for the less expensive flights. Wait for T flights to be offered, they are on average the cheapest.

I have found some good rates on Delta now, but not sure if it's too early.

We found a good deal on flights the first week in January so we bought our tickets for our October trip. I can't speak for Delta but the carrier we use only offers good seat sales on the flights with times we really don't prefer (ie a 6 hour layover then arriving at MCO in the middle of the night).

I really don't know much about Delta's policies but with our carrier if we have to change our schedules we get a credit for the tickets we already purchased. Also, because we're flying first class our carrier's policy is that if the fares go down on our flights we get a credit for the difference. Bottom line is there really isn't any risk in purchasing early and it's one less thing to have to book later.
