When Southwest opens for December on June 15th, do you think there will be special lower deals on that exact opening day? Is this what they have done in the past? I have the "Ding" lower fare announcements on my desktop already. Should I expect that very first day to be the lowest rates?

I've found their rates to be high on the first day.

It depends.

My experience is that if you are booking for peak travel times, such as holidays, the fares generally do not get discounted later and you are best off purchasing on the first day. The worst that can happen with SWA in that scenario is that you rebook later at a lower fare for no charge and get the difference in the form of a credit.

If you are booking at an off-peak time, you have a better chance of there being a fare sale for your dates closer to the time you will be traveling. There's no way to guarantee that, however.

How do you know when they open their windows?

I'm looking to book fares for March 2011.

We booked for June 2009 the day fares were posted and it was the cheapest that day that I ever saw.

If you click on "travel tools" on the SW site they tell you.

Now accepting reservations through November 5, 2010.
On June 15, we will open our schedule for sale through January 7, 2011. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently.

Don't mean to be a thread crasher.. but anyone have credits they can't use? :goodvibes

I have booked our flights out of bwi the last 2 yrs on the day the schedule was released. For us, our flights were either the cheapest rate or within $5 of being the cheapest rate that we saw. For our January/February 2010 trip we ended up with $54 each way and the yr before it $49 each way. Good flight times and non-stop flights.

What time is the schedule usually released the day they open it up? Is it at midnight or could vary at anytime?

When the fares opened up in February for the current booking dates, it was posted in the early afternoon. I remember checking all morning and nothing the just after lunch they were there ...not sure if that is how it always works but just keep checking the website!

So let me get this right...If I book on the 15th for my Dec 1st trip and the price goes down you can rebook with Southwest at no extra charge?

Anyone have an idea when February 2011 schedules and fares will be released?

Yes there are NO rebooking fees. However, when you are booking the lowest fares, the prices difference is often handled in SW Travel Funds, which you can just use to buy more SWA flights. Works fine for me...

I'm about 90% sure they give you 6 months to use the credit.

Can any one else confirm that?

Last time I did it, they said it was 6 months.
