When should we show up?

What time do the parks open?

I have heard that if the official opening time is 9:00 am that the parks usually open at 8:30am

So lets say the official opening time is
9:00 am on may 2nd
* (the day I am going)
That is a sunday so its early entry day and I can get in at 8:00

I have heard that they open the gates earlier than that even, and i should show up as early as 7:00- 7:30

Is there any merit to this?

I am only going for one day and would like to get there early, buy my one day ticket and get in as soon as they open.

What time should I show up in order to get my ticket and be the fist one in the gate?

Nope. You can show up that early, but you'll be outside the gates waiting. They may open up the turnstiles and let people into the front area, but you won't pass under the train station or into the park until the posted opening time.

It might let you start going through the security bag check and metal detectors though, I assume they start that before he gates open? anyone know?

We got off the monorail and went right on through security 30 minutes before opening. We sat on the brick wall directly in front of the station and watched the train come in. They did not open early!
