When should I go?

It's my first visit to Disneyland. I'm planning on staying about 5 days, but am unsure when to go. It will be in September or begin October. Labor Day weekend might be too crowded for me. I hate crowds, but would like all the rides and shows to be open. When do they close Haunted Mansion in September? Do they organise anything like Mickey's not so scary Halloween party in October? Thanks for your help!
