When I was a kid

When I was a kid we only had one phone and my sister and I begged my mother to get a longer cord so that we could walk into another room f and talk in privacy.

we used typewriters and then when i went to college i thought i was cool because i had a word processor.

We got tested on using the card catolg at the library.

I could go into a store and buy cigarettes for my mother , no questions asked.

We used to sit in the back of the pick up truck with our dog and drive down the highway. That was sooo fun!

In typing class, we had to learn to use the same pressure on the keys with all our fingers (those darn pinkies!) so that the letters all looked the same...no dark and light letters because the key didn't hit the ribbon with the same pressure.

We couldn't spend much time on the phone because someone might be calling.

Most moms stayed home

Almost everyone smoked

Divorce was hardly heard of (I lived in a very small town)

They separated us in school classes by aptitude

A college education was great, but not required

Pick up games of baseball/football/capture the flag with all the neighborhood kids after school

My first pair of Nike sneakers

Luke & Laura

One TV in the house, no cable...but one HUGE aerial antenna on the roof

The start of the exercise craze (specifically aerobics)

Disney World was only the Magic Kingdom, a couple of hotels, a campground and a monorail

The big town parade for the bicentennial

Cell phones weighed about five pounds and the battery packs had to be carried around in a separate bag

The Blizzard of '76 and missing school for at least a week

The green Buick Century station wagon with wood paneling and the flip down seat in the back - seat belts not required

Calling up my friends by using only the last four numbers of their phone numbers on our rotary dial phone

My sister and I used to hide my dads by hanging the box on the Christmas Tree. He always knew where to look, but it took a while to find those reds among all the christmas balls.

We could go do whatever after school- my parents never worried until it either got dark( street lights came on) or it was dinner time and we weren't home. Which never happened- we actually listened because there were consequenses to disobedience back in the day.

Designer clothing? heck no- we had Kmart, or not Kmart. As long as you were in the "not KMart" category, you were ok.

If we got hurt at a friends house, my parents fixed us up and told us to be more careful- even had a discussion as to how we could have avoided it, them sent us off to play and told us not to be a baby about it. The word "lawyer" never came up. The friends parents were not called. No questions were asked as to anyones wrongdoing- accidents happen.

I had to go look it up because this "largest snowstorm" was driving me crazy to know which year it actually happened, so I did a search!

I asked DH about it & he remembered it too, that where the snowtrucks piled the snow was taller than you were.

I don't ever remember it snowing that much since! We have had big snowstorms but they are cleared by the next day or so depending on when they start but nothing so memorable.

Here is what I came up with for Chicago anyway:

*ONLY* 25.6 inches of snow in that week. :lmao:

Ok girls here's one: Raise your hand :wave2: if you had the big puffy pom poms on your roller skates. I had yellow ones.:rolleyes1

I remember wearing leg warmers and it wasn't to dance.

I also remember wearing long johns under my skirts. )I am not sure if that was just a local thing or not)

I remember trying to get a million different kinds of shoelaces. My favorite were rainbow.

Trying to feather my hair and keeping a comb in the back pocket of my jordache jeans.

My mother had all my izod shirt collars embroidered with my initials on them.

I also had courderoy pants in every color.

who remebers those orangish color boots with the red laces. I don't remember what they were called.

:wave2: I had forgot about those! I had green ones!!:cool1:

My cousins and I would ride in the back of my Granddaddy's pick up on a very busy highway to the "Kwik Kitchen" near them!

When I was a kid, pregnant women did not know the sex of their babies until they gave birth! A woman who gave birth would stay in the hospital for like a week or 2, maybe longer, lol!!

Also, I had chicken pox as well as my friends. No vaccine existed yet.

ok here are some more. People beating each other up for a Cabbage Patch
, Koosa were Cabbage Patch pets? My dad paid 60$ for a Cabbage patch pre me at The Galleria mall in White Plains . ( my mom thought he was carazy)
My mom worked out to a Jane Fonda Record:lmao:
the 3rd break light was just being made in new cars
The grand union had a cash registar that talked in a womans voice.:goodvibes
The Christmas tree light bulbs were like lamp bulbs:idea:

one more thing. I made freind ship pins out of safty pins and beads. Collecting stickers made me so cool. I really wanted a jordash purse ( sp)with the thin string.

Public transit wasn't air conditioned.

Public phones were phone booths.

You took your film to a Fotomat, or sent it away!

All stores were closed on Sundays.

Pro-keds sneakers, Converse all-stars, PF Flyers. I wanted Pro-keds in the worst way and my mom swore they were just for boys.

Feathered hair like Farah

Standing up and actually having to say the Pledge.
Singing My Country Tis of Thee after the Pledge in elementary school

Those old ugly gym uniforms!

Playing hop-scotch and potsy with slate pieces that we found in the yard. Playing Spud for hours.

Going to the roller skating rink on Friday nights.

You could use a pay phone for 10 cents.

Just say "whoa!" and vote for Randy!

Randy of the Redwoods. I seem to recall he wore a Dashiki (I am certain I spelled that wrong) like one my mom had. We teased her about that mercilessly.

wow-i have'nt heard this name in years!!!!! that's randee of the redwoods and one of the creations of 'ducks breath mystery theatre' which was HUGE in the san francisco bay area in the late 70's. we used to go see them at comedy clubs all the time when i was a teen.

thanks for the memories :rotfl2:
