When gas hit $5, what will you do?

i am more afraid about how high sustained gas proces are going to effect our economy than my personal financial situation.

pretty much any consumer good (including groceries) will go up in price.

i can take public transportation, but it would not surprise me if they raised rates, which would basically end up costing me the same as if i drove.

If it went dry now we could have them drill the existing well deeper. They would only do this to a dry well, but not a working well. Is that an option for you?

No - not an option.. I had a previous post about the well (over on the Budget Board) that explains why.. My current well isn't even on my property..

Gas prices over here are around $8.50. Car engines tend to be a lot smaller too. If your job involves lots of driving buy a large, comfortable car, but if your driving tends to be confined to the local area do you really need a huge 4x4 or minivan?

The rich people of this country who can afford gas at any price are probably wishing it goes so high that it will drive low and middle class people off the roads and make it easier for them to drive their big cars anywhere they like without traffic jams.

I do not understand why the price of gas rising comes as any surprise to anyone. Petroleum is a finite resource. Demand has been increasing steadily for decades, and will continue to increase dramatically, particularly with the economic development that is occurring in China and India.

Instead of dealing with this reality by developing more fuel efficient vehicles and alternative technologies, we have chosen the head in the sand approach, and have continued to blithely buy gas guzzling vehicles and slash funding for alternative energy research. Time and time again we have given the auto industry a pass on making all vehicles meet the CAFE requirements, and only now tightening up those requirements only marginally.

My dad was an engineer in an energy-related field. I can remember dinner table conversations about the inevitability of high fuel prices and scarcity from the time I was 8 years old, which was quite a long time ago!

We've got nobody to blame but ourselves.

i am seriously concerned......we own a mid size business and the gas prices effect our bottom line! we end up paying more from our deliveries and then i have to pass it on to our customers...it SUCKS! we bought a honda last summer before the gas prices went up up up, so we'll just park the durango and use the honda more...35mps vs 15 sure makes a difference! and when we do sign installs that require a drive out of town, our install price will be maybe 10-20$ more to make up for the gas.....

it stinks we have to pass it along to our customers.....all of our suppliers pass the cost onto us, which hits our bottom line...what is interesting is that there is always a line item "Fuel surcharge" from our suppliers...and it seems to always hang onto our bills a few weeks after the prices have dropped.... if gas hits 5$ a gallon we will stop eating out. period. that stinks for my local economy...

I'm curious as to what percentage of your operating costs are directly related to fuel? I mean, what percentage of the overall cost of the service you provide is fuel?

I have recently been getting estimates to have a well drilled and all of the drillers have a $1.50 fuel surcharge PER FOOT for drilling and when you're talking about drilling 200 feet or more, that's quite an additional expense.. But - they can't really be expected to eat those costs themselves..

This situation is bad - and is only going to get worse..

This is what all of the well drillers are doing now - the only difference being that some will reveal up front what the additional charge is per foot and others "hide" it within the per foot cost..

Diesel fuel is no cheaper than regular fuel up here now and the costs are being passed on by virtually every type of business..

With any luck I won't have to drill this year, but if I do, I will use the driller who was honest about the additional cost up front and didn't try to "hide" it elsewhere..
