When does school start again in the South?

Dallas ISD finished today (YAY!) and they go back August 15. Fourth grade for DS!

I will not be impressed if that stupid legislation goes through to start back after Labor Day and go until the beginning of June. There is nothing to do in August - it is entriely too hot to be outside and the ozone is so bad it's unhealthy to be out if you can stand the heat! GRR! Politics. GRR!

If they pass the new calendar we will lose part of all of the existing breaks - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring break will all be shorter. There are no breaks in the Fall as it is now.

With DH's job he has certain weeks when he is allowed to take vacation, so we are at the mercy of his job AND the school district. Even if we could manage to schedule his vacation during a school break if the break is only two days it isn't very helpful!

I will be very unhappy if SB2 passes as amended. I hate the proposed calendar. My sons are in the Fort Worth ISD and our school is on a modified year round calendar. That means, among other things, that we get a full week off in October and 2 weeks in the spring. If we don't get our week in October that means no WDW for us and no MNSSHP! I have called and written our legislators. How can a Texan rest when the Texas Legislature is in session! ;)

ncbyrne, part of the variance in school calendars has to do with air conditioning. In the south, schools have pretty much had a.c. since it was invented. In the north many schools still do not have it, so starting back in August would be too hot. Part of it is just tradition. I know people here have an absolute fit because they don't want their kids going back before Labor Day, and most schools start back late August. I would rather have a year round schedule myself with breaks spread out throughout the year. I have always been envious of people that get a fall break. However, we have just decided to start homeschooling so now I can make my own schedule. This was not the reason for our decision, but it is a great benefit!!!

Here in my county, Cherokee, which is north metro Atlanta, we start back August 1. We have our first break the week of Sept. 18, when we will be heading south to WDW to take advantage of off-season rates!

Wilson County, Tennessee--just east of Nashville--starts back on July 27th. That's for kids--all day, too!! Our last day this year is June 2. Very short summer--but two weeks off in fall, winter, and spring--so that helps!

On or after Aug. 25 in North Carolina, mandated by state law. We have an extra almost three weeks of summer this year as we switch to the later start.
That's weird because I have family in NC and they are going make August 15th. Here in FL it's August 8th.

In Wisconsin we start school Sept. 1. We only get 2 days off in Oct. 3 for Thanksgiving. Dec. 23-Jan. 3 for Christmas and The Friday before Easter till the following Tuesday. Wisconsin mandates 160 of school. I think next year we get out Jun 7.

My DS9 and DD6 are in a private Christian school here in VA and they start back on Aug. 24th
My oldest, DD15 is in public school here and I am thinking she starts on Aug. 22nd
