When do you take out your air conditioners?

My husband just took out 2 of our air conditioners. When I asked him why he was taking them out, he says, "it's time". :confused3

I'm assuming since he's lived in New England his whole life (he's almost 42) he knows that just because we've had one or two nice "fall like" days, that we are more than certain going to have a few more 90*/hot/humid days. Never fails.

I swear, I wish one day he'll actually listen to me. I'm pretty sure I'm right. :thumbsup2

We are in the mid-Atlantic and usually take them out towards the end of September. We will have some beautiful Fall days then "Indian Summer" will hit us with another week or so of 90+ degree days. The a/c also helps keep the humidity down.
That said, the stink bugs could change all that. Two years ago they came in through the window units - 1st stink bug & the window units are history for the year.

Never thought about it, most everything here has central heat and air. Apartments and houses that have box ac units have them permanently installed in the wall, so you can't remove them...........and most have a heating element in them, so you wouldn't have heat in the winter then if you did remove it.

I know, some parts of the country don't need ac. My cousin in Canada was hosting a big party in his $1.7 million home during a heatwave in Calgary...another cousin ....from Ottawa.....wanted to know why he didn't spend another $5,000 to have ac installed!

I only have one window a/c unit- the rest are in the walls--but either way I run mine until sometime in Nov. at night, I like to sleep with it at 60 or I am miserable. The other ones I don't run much after the end of Sept.

We have central air but if we had window units I wouldn't take them out until after halloween. We've had far too many heat waves in early fall to chance being miserable.

We took the upstairs ones out a few weeks ago. Its cool enough at night just to open a window or use a window fan, the downstairs one is actually on right now even though its only 70 here and kinda rainy, but its just too humid to have the windows open... This one will come out in October probably.

When I lived in Illinois, we didn't have AC and when we lived in Montana, we just had a swamp unit that we hardly used. It was just covered up during the colder months because it was a through the wall unit.

I guess it depends on where in Illinois........my wife's grandfather lived just west of Evansville, Indiana in Illinois, we were there every October for 20 years, the hottest most humid place I have ever been in October.

We were 30 miles south of Chicago.

:confused3 I didn't know that people took their air conditioners out. Even my aunt and uncle had an additional window ac in their bedroom to go along with the central air, they never took it out.

I didn't know people took them out either but I guess I can see the logic in that if you live in New England. I guess when you have the window unit in, you don't get a good sealed up window area. Taking it out and shutting the window fully would probably be a good idea!

We are in New England. I would NEVER take them out before mid-October because there are always going to be those random days where we use the heat in the evening and morning, and the ac in the afternoon. :sad2: The reality is that usually, I finally harass my DH into taking them out right about the same time as the first snow, :rolleyes1

got central ac but before that, it would be late sept, early oct. Live in Northern Ohio

I'm in New England & it is not time yet. It is only mid-50's at night. When it gets to be too cold in the room, with the window A/C in, then they will come out. Currently, at 50 degrees, we have the windows open at night, the a/c off finally & the ceiling fans either off or on low.

A/c is used more for humidity than for heat. It can still get humid. And might have a hot day, but more likely humid day.

Usually out by Oct though....as the pellet stove ends up coming on not too long after that. lol

I don't know one single person in New England who would be foolish enough to leave an A/C in a window during the window. We pay enough for heat....why leave the window open. That's nuts! Installed in the wall is different. You can still take them out & stuff insulation in the hole & seal it off. Or you can buy insulated covers, seal it all with window plastic & tape, but it is still a waste of heating money. My office used to cover & seal the ones built into the wall. Cover & seal from outside & inside. We have one in wall, & 2 in windows. ALL get removed.

October!! We still have muggy nights sometimes.
Right now we shut them off when we go to bed and they stay off most of the morning but we get full sun on the front of the house all afternoon so we kick them on about 2-3 pm.

I did leave the window unit in once and didn't have a cover. DH was gone for most of the year for work and I couldn't get it out. The kids were to little, etc. I just hung a heavy moving blanket over the whole window to keep the cold out.
the AC did not work the next summer so now DS16 and I take them out together.
I have 2 units upstairs in the bedrooms but they are the ones that sit in the room so those are easy to take out.

This is interesting to me, I had no idea that people removed ACs. I've always lived in NC though and everyone I know has central, don't even turn the heat on until sometime in November usually.

We have Central Air but our bedroom gets warm, so we have a window unit in there. It's on now..it's like 90% humidity outside right now. We will wait until we are for sure the heat is over with.

Have central air. My (video) game room has a window unit in it. Can go in June 1st has to be out October 15th. Condo board rules.

It was 76 degrees out today where I'm at in western PA, very nice you would think. Being Sunday, I was out just flying the RC airplane doing absolutely nothing but standing and looking at the sky. My shirt was soaking wet from sweating.

It's the humidity. We've had a fair share of nights lately that we've turned the AC off and opened windows, but the last few nights even with it getting down below 70, it is too humid to open the window and put the fan in it to sleep. AC ran last night and is running right now while outside it is currently 68.

If the low is to be below 65, we generally turn off the AC and put the window fans up (only AC out in the living room, bedrooms all closed until turned off and then we have window fans for the bedrooms.)

For some reason, it doesn't seem like the house cools off too well when the temp drops over night. We can sit outside and a nice cool breeze can be blowing, but inside with all the windows open, none of that breeze seems to hit the open windows and it just gets stuffy in the house.
