When do you book flights?

Someone else asked but no one saw/answered. How does this work? How do you book and then rest assured that you'll get a credit when/if the price goes down? I assume this is specific to Southwest, but could you provide some of the details?

Thanks!

Southwest does not charge fees for flight changes. You can book at the higher price, then if a lower fare comes out you can cancel the first flight and rebook at the lower price. The price difference gets placed in a travel funds account that can be used up to one year (from the date of original purchase I think) So you don't get the money back, but if you know you'll more than likely travel within that year window, why not?
