When do Southern schools start back in “fall”?

So crazy how big of a difference there is to school start times around the country. My daughter's school will be starting on September 10 in 2018.

Depends on what you mean by Southern. In the Atlanta metro area, most public (and private) school systems go back the first or second week of August. We were 8/7 this year.

My son's school with start back on August 6th 2018. We are in South GA.

Here in TN we go back first week of Aug. Exact date is not set yet for next year, it varies but is always a "single digit date"

Kentucky passed a bill to give school systems incentives to start the year later as the sponsor states KY loses tens of millions of dollars due to tourism loss. The sponsor was from Scott County.

As a result, the kids started 8-10 in Scott County this year. Next year it is 8-8. There are several proposed school calendars posted on the BOE website and parents vote for the best one. This week for a start date wins year after year.

My stance remains that if you push the school start back 2-3 weeks, the end date is 2-3 weeks later. Instead of Labor Day loss, you would lose Memorial Day tourism. KY weather is unpredictable. We lost 19 days to snow a few years ago and the last day of school was June 10. If they started 3 weeks later, the last day would have been July 1.

Most schools in South Central KY start no later than 8/15 whereas some start as early as the last days of July. The state has encouraged school districts to start later, but I haven't seen many districts following the request.

Our part of KY is looking at sometime closer to 8/20, which is about a week later than usual. We'll just get a shorter Christmas break. Mountain counties get the worst snow days - sometimes as much as 6 wks of school. They almost always have to start at the beginning of August or they'll never make their required number of instructional hours.
