From a Texas Teacher, Texas is all over the place. The law at one point was the earliest was last Monday in August. This would save on electricity and other necessities. Then, if a plan for improvement could be determined, you could apply for a waiver. Two years ago, the state started to count minutes in a year, and not days. Now something is going around called "District of Innovation", basically saying that if your district goes through the right channels and processes, you can start earlier in August, such as mine did this year (8/21), and we aren't getting out until 6/1. Some schools started the week before us, some the week after. I think this is a strategy to even out the semesters, and taking all of the professional developments we have in the beginning of the year (which in some districts is 10 days worth) and implement them into the entire year, giving the students more days off during the year instead of during breaks. Count on Texas starting before Labor Day, but some will start back sooner than others.
