FIL is taking the girls skiing in January. My younger one has a nice down jacket that she can wear and a pair of ski pants my oldest has outgrown. My oldest has nothing. I need a ski jacket, ski pants for her as well as ski hats, gloves and long underwear for both of them. Any ideas for getting this stuff fairly cheap. They don't ski regularly so I really don't want to spend a lot.

I also am not quite sure exactly what they are going to need. Any ideas would be helpful.

Our local TJMaxx has great deals for ski jackets and pants. You probably need Jackets, pants, goggles, gloves, long underwear (depends on how cold it gets), and helmets. In Colorado, most kids wear helmets.

Do you have a Goodwill or Salvation Army in your area. I have purchased several ski outfits through them. Most of them were brand new or close to it. Go check them out first before paying full price. A lot of people invest top dollar in these items and then end up using them once or twice.

Can they just wear their bicycle helmets or are there special ones for skiing? Can they be rented with the skis at the resort? If so, FIL will pay. I just need to get clothes.

BTW, they will be in Utah.

Oh, and goodwill is a great idea. I have one near me I will check it out for a jacket and pants.

I would try Ebay also. I bought a few items on sale in January after the holidays for the kids. I found ski pants and jackets on sale through company kids and I think Kohls. Whatever you do I learned get waterproof including the gloves.

Last year everything ski was gone from Dicks in Jan. My mother had given DD a gift certificate for Christmas. It was useless. They told me ski season is over:confused3

I did find the Helmets, goggles & gloves at the Sport Authority.

I really need to buy this stuff before Christmas. We are going away for almost 2 weeks and won't have time to shop. I can't believe it was gone without a clearance sale. I want the clearance sale.;)

Sports Authority usually starts putting their ski gear on sale in late November/early December. My kids start lessons the first weekend of January and I've alway gotten their stuff on clearance.

As for the helmets, no you shouldn't use bike helmets and yes you can rent them at the resorts.

You will need:

Long Underware (I usually get this at Sports Authority on Black Friday)
Snow Pants
Jacket
Gloves
Goggle
Snow Boots would be good too (Again I get these really cheap on BF at SA)

Great skiing in Utah. Ski helmets are very expensive. You can rent helmets at the resort and you can't use bicycle helmets.
Sports authority and Dicks are very expensive. I bought DD's Jacket (great ski brand) from TJMAXX for $29.99 last year and still can use it this year. Ski pants came from Target for $15. Goggles and gloves from Big 5 for $15 each (can be used for several years). We rented the helmets.

The one thing I would spend the extra dollars on are ski socks. They are worth it. Get a couple pair for each person and hang dry every night. There is nothing worse than cold feet.

Another thing to think about is whether the kids are going to be skiing or snow boarding. Snow boarding boots can double as your reg. snow boots ski boots can not. The kids catch on pretty quick to snow boarding usually.

Are there any good brands I should know about? I am ignorant about skiing. I personally hate it. What materials should the socks and underwear be? I have been looking on line and they sell silk long underwear. Is this what I should be getting? Ack. Why is this freaking me out?

Thank God for this thread. I was going to ask the same question.

We are taking my kids skiing also for the first time in January. They are 6,7 and 10 and will be in lessons all day.

They all have Lands End parkas, which I thought would be fine for their jackets. And they have snow pants and bibs, but they are from Target. Is the quality good enough?

Also, do you recommend bibs or pants?

Finally, should they wear gloves, or would mittens be okay? I'm thinking of the youngest would prefer mittens.

Some good brands are Patagonia, Spyder, The North face, Bonfire, Burton, Columbia, Obermeyer. All these brands are expensive. I think the following items will be great for kids skiing for a week or two.

Some goggles from sports authority

Gloves from target

Silk long underwear is good. For socks I prefer the SmartWool socks. They are soft, breath well and keep the moisture away from your feet. If you have an REI you should be able to find them there or any sports store that sells snow gear. Oh ya, don't forget the beanie for your head.

As far as bibs verses pants. When my kids were younger I put them in bibs to help keep the snow from going down their pants. When they turned about 8 they moved into pants. They prefer them because they are easier to get on and off.

When dressing keep in mind that even though you are in the snow you can get over heated by all the layers. You don't want to sweat. You want to be warm but not too warm. Also, sunscreen. You can get a good sunburn from the sun reflecting off the snow on to you. If you decide you really want to start investing into this as a hobby you will want to get goggles. But for now if the kids are mainly just going to be playing around they will be fine.

Mitten vs Gloves mine prefer gloves. Again, they did the mittens when they were really young and it would take a long time for them to figure out how to get a finger in each finger hole. After they were old enough to figure out how they wanted gloves and thought mittens were for babies.

This can be an expensive sport. You really have to shop it or you can find your self paying out a lot of money. Somethings you do have to buy new obviously like the socks and underwear. But the pant and boots check out your consignment shops, craigslist, garage sells, salvation army etc. Like I said earlier especially with kids stuff since they out grown things so quickly they often get worn one season, sometimes just for one weekend trip and then people find themselves selling them to purchase the next size up.

No mittens. They get wet very quickly. Target quality might not be as good as other more expensive brands; however, since kids use these items only a few times a year and probably need a bigger size the next year, I wouldn't use a more expensive brand.

I usually buy a more expensive jacket (eg; Lands End, LL bean) for my kids for everyday use.

You guys are so great. I am only buying a jacket and pants for the older one and she wears a ladies small (actually, I am thinking of getting a medium jacket because she'll need a heavy sweater underneath). I have been looking online and I think sierrateadingpost.com seems to have decent prices. Still far from cheap though.

Anybody ever heard of Skea (brand name) for jackets?
