I know last year it was on the 20th- what day this year... other areas can also post.

Thanks

I'm in Mississippi and we usually start back on August 1 with the students starting a few days after that. We are out before Memorial Day.

In my part of Maryland, the students return to school on the Monday before Labor Day.

We will be in WDW in early August on DD's b-day!! Hopefully BCV!!

Labor Day is September 1, 2008, so according to the statute, the earliest schools can start in FL is August 18. Most will probably use this date.

Actually, according to the Orlando Sentinel, the schools are restricted to start dates "no earlier than AUG. 20" but there are a lot of people fighting to get this legislation changed again.

I checked our counties website and there is no start date for us yet either, sorry I couldn't be of more help. but keep checking the lake county school's website

Actually, if you reread the Orlando Sentinel blog cited, it says, "They are restricted to a start no earlier than Aug. 20 this year." (My emphasis.) That is because this year (2007), August 20 was 14 days before Labor Day. Later in the entry, it references, "the law requiring schools not to open earlier than two weeks before Labor Day." Again, my emphasis.

That is the current restriction under statute, schools may not open any earlier than 14 days before Labor Day. In 2008, that date will be Monday, August 18. Barring legislation changes, all indications are that Sarasota County will approve a calendar with an 8/18 start date. As I said in my pp, I would expect most FL counties to do the same.

t-beri is correct that some are trying to undo the "Save Our Summers" legislation. I, for one, wrote every FL legislator last year suggesting facets of the public school system that needed their attention much more urgently than the calendar. What really helped that legislation pass was the backing of the tourism industry, claiming that having Floridian students return to school so much earlier than their northern counterparts deprived hospitality businesses of inexpensive teenage labor for the last month of the summer season. It's always about the money--sigh.

Sorry about the editorial comments, stepping off soapbox.

For me, it's not about "saving money" it's about allowing kids and teachers in Florida to have a decent summer break when the rest of the world is off.

I have teacher friends who had to go back to work in JULY! Schools were starting THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST! It's crazy, nutso!

It's absolutely indefensible to have kids going back to school in August to meet the needs of some stupid test.

At least they got this one thing right...now they can start on all the other things they need to fix!
