Just looking at when the local area schools start again?
Considering planning a trip for the week of August 20th, Not sure that CA schools start that early? Of course I may have to contend with AP's as well... any thoughts?

Thanks!

I don't know when local schools go back (though I think it's probably the next week), but I would suggest avoiding that week like the plague, since APs will have just come unblocked. We went that week one year (not knowing what was going on) and it was pretty bad - I would not do it again. Well, I would if that was my only possible option, but I would be nervous. :)

True about the passholders.

We are in NorCal - San Francisco Unified returns to school Aug 20. Private schools up here aren;t back in until after Labor Day.

We are locals and school starts August 29th. But fear the AP locals- they're going to bum-rush the place that week to get in as much as possible before school starts.

Hi :) I was there from Aug 23rd -29th in 2011 and had the same concerns about school starts, lifted blackout dates and whatever else. It was not that bad at all and as long as you have some kind of a game plan you will be just fine. Although, Cars Land was not open then but from what I have read DL has not been that crowded anyways this year.

I think most AP holders go during the day, meaning that you are good to go at rope drop, get fp's for whatever, play until 11-12, all the while the AP'ers are slowly drifting into the parks. Go take a break around noon or 1pm when parks are more full, come back in the late afternoon (4ish) Families need to go soonish, some kiddies have parental curfews hehe, and the local AP'ers still have to go to work the next day too (most are not on vacation I found out ;) lol) so alot will leave earlier at night.

Of course this is just my un-studied opinion hehe but I think it is fair to a degree :)

In the end, just go and have fun!!! Use FP and SR (when able) and it will be great.

Here is a link to my trip report from last August to give you an idea of how it was for me:

I might be there 8/22 - 8/23 and was wondering the same thing.

Doing a quick google search netted me the following info from a similar thread.....

Well, the largest school district in the area, LA Unified will start on August 14th, 2012.
http://www.kcet.org/updaily/1st_and...arting-earlier-for-2012-2013-school-year.html

The change being implemented for the 2012-2013 school year will cause LAUSD schools on a traditional, two-semester calendar to begin school in August. Starting on Aug. 14 and ending on June 4, supporters of the change believe that starting school early will mean less loss of knowledge during the summer, help align high school with college calendars and create better testing schedules.<<

Riverside County Schools (a county in the Greater Los Angeles Area, aka Southland) starts August 27th.

Orange County Schools pick their own schedules, and many of them start prior to Labor Day in the last few years (mainly to allow a longer Christmas Break, which many parents wanted and refused to bring their kids back to school until after Three Kings Day for religious reasons, which cost the schools a lot of money in unexcused absences).

IMHO, now over half the schools start prior to the Labor Day period, which has been a gradual shift to an earlier start.

OK, so we have LA Unified, Riverside, and I just checked Ventura County (another county in the Southland) , they start on August 21st.

San Bernardino County Traditional Calendar starts August 1st (yes, that early).

San Diego County (San Diego Unified) the day after Labor Day.

As mentioned Orange County has many different schools on different schedules.

Anaheim Union High School starts August 27th.

Santa Ana Unified starts Tuesday, August 22nd

Tustin Unified starts September 5th.

So we have 4 out of the 5 counties in the Southland main school districts starting before Labor Day, and the 5th County (Orange) is a mixture... (and you can add San Diego County if you are talking about Southern California in general)

So as I stated, in post #1, schools start to go back to school in August, and then in Post #5, more than half start prior to Labor Day, and that is MOST.

And if you want to look at the entire state, here are some major cities..
San Francisco starts August 20th.

Clovis Unified (when I searched for Fresno) starts August 20th.

Orange Unified also now starts before Labor Day - August 23. I personally love it because we get three weeks off at Christmas and two weeks off for spring break.

Ventura County has multiple start dates, not one as previously stated. A large portion of the county starts on Aug 29.

This isn't exactly local, but my school district starts on Aug. 7th. I live in Modesto (Central Valley).

I live in Ventura County, and my son starts school Aug. 29th. We'll be at the DLR from Aug. 24th-28th.

I think last year might have been a little different because both Star Tours and Little Mermaid had soft openings and AP previews before the summer blockouts, providing APers with the opportunity to experience these attractions before the summer rush. This year Cars Land and BVS did not open until after the Select APs were already blocked out, meaning a significant number of APers have still not had the opportunity to see the new additions.

And I also should point out that lots of local APers are adults without children. For a lot of people it's a locals hangout and not just some place to take their kids.

So Cal San Bernadino County - Cino Valley District starts Aug. 27th! Thus begin the dreaded high school Marching Band season!! The hectic pace of Friday night Football games & ALL DAY Saturday field show competitions! LOL!! Will still try & squeeze in some weekend DLR time!!

I'm in Orange County, and we always start the Thursday after Labor Day. I have gone to DLR almost every 3rd week of August for years and years, and it has gotten more and more crowded. I think this year--even with more districts in session this week--will be absolutely crazy with CarsLand--especially the 20th. However, most locals do NOT do rope drop. We meander in around 11 or 12, so if you go at opening, you'll probably be able to get a lot done before 11.

Thanks for the input everybody! I think we have officially decided to do October instead. It's our favorite time of year to go, I was just being impatient wanting to do a summer trip, but running out of time. I think we will be happier with October, so now looking at the week of October 8th, not arriving until Columbus day, spending the following 4 days in the parks, to avoid the 3 day weekend crowd.

Don't forget to check and see if any rides are down that week so you don't get a sad surprise.
