When did your child quit wearing pull-ups for bedtime?

My 3 year old son who will be 4 this November, is completely potty trained but he still wears pull ups at night. When do most parents start having their child sleep in regular underwear at night? Is he still too young yet?

Thanks for any advice! :)

If he is waking up dry I would try now. My 3 boys all stopped wearing pull-up at 3 1/2 years old. We went to disney when my oldest DS was 3 1/2 and again when the twins were 3 1/2 and kept them in pull-up until after our trips, just in case.

My daughter was just turning 5 when she totally gave up pullups- she just had no problem with have a wet pull up but refused to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night- I let her tell me when she was ready. I'm sure many wouldn't do that but it was less stress on her & us- and we had had a lot of family changes so it never seemed to be an issue I wanted to force- but then she just came to me and said she wanted to wear big girl panties to bed too and she did it on her own. My pediatrician said to let her do it in her own time.

My DS was trained at 3years and 3 months and my DD at 2-1/2. They both were trained right away during the night also. We did keep them in pull ups a little while at night but they were dry every morning so we just put them in regular underwear. Some friends of ours however has a almost 7 year old who still wears pull ups to bed - he just doesn't wake up when he has to go to the bathroom. I usually say if they can stay dry at night for over a week then change to underwear and see what happens.

Basically, if his pull up is dry every morning then you can put him in undies. If not, he's prob. not quite ready yet. My DS started waking up dry at 3 (actually I think before that, but we just assumed he was too young). He's only had an accident once when he had a very high fever. I also always make sure that he goes pee right before bed. My DD, now 3 is sometimes dry in the morning and sometimes wet so we're still letting her wear them to bed. I wouldn't start to worry about it until after age 5-just my opinion. :)

Is he able to realize that he has to go...is he dry through the night, and or get up and go if he has to?

My DS3 could have stopped wearing them last December. He has been dry through the night since then. We were too chicken to stop putting him in them that early. We waited until he was wearing underwear all day (that was about May). Once he was able to realize, on his own, that he had to go to the bathroom, and either went on his own, or told us he had to go and was able to wait long enough to get to a bathroom (sometime that was 10 - 15 minutes, depending on where we were at...driving and all) that was the end of all pull-ups, day and night. I just couldn't see spending money on them when he wasn't wearing them during the day, and was completely dry at night for the past several months! Since we stopped using them, he has had only one "accident". It was at night, and he was really sick and out of it because of medication, and just didn't realize he had to go. But other than that, he will actually wake up in the middle of the night and go all by himself, if he has to go...now if only we can convince him to tuck himself back in without waking us up to do so!!!

If he is dry through the night, I would say give it a shot. Get one of those platic matress protectors to put on under the sheets, that way, if he has an accident, the matress will be protected. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone. It comes and goes, he probably wakes up dry maybe 2 times a week and with a full pull-up the others. I guess I shouldn't rush it. I didn't rush him with doing #2 (he would hold it all day at preschool and ask me for a pull up at home which I normally would at least try to get him to sit on the potty, usually it was a no go) he finally was fully trained with that about 2 1/2 months ago (yay!). I guess we'll work it out. Thanks again for the responses!

I have twins. They were potty trained at the same time, just after they turned 3 years old. One twin stopped needing a pullup at night as soon as he was potty trained. My other son just turned 5 and is still using pullups at night...2 years later. I'm beginning to get concerned. He's also not the kind of kid that can hold it long during the daytime. If he says he needs to use the bathroom, we better find him one within 5-10 minutes or he'll have an accident.

We waited too long with our older son. He was so used to sleeping through the need to go that he had bed wetting issues for way too long.

With our younger son, we used the night time wet alarm thing, not long after he was potty trained. He was dry all night in no time.

My 2 dds were completely different. One needed them until she was 6+, the other has been dry at night since she was 2. We stopped the pull-ups at night for the one who had trouble. She's a VERY sound sleeper and we ended up with bed-wetting problems. It was just very frustrating for her. We went back to the pull-ups for a while. Finally, we ditched the pull-ups again. I had to wake her up every night before I went to sleep. She would go in half asleep (or practically sleep walking) and "go". I did that for probably a year or so before she was able to get up and go on her own when she needed to. Now she's over that. :cool1:

for my DD it was about a month or two after she was day trained. I started realizing that every morning she was waking up with a dry pull up and just decided to go with underwear. She had an occassional accident, but not much at all.

If he is waking with a dry pull up night after night I would make the switch. If he's waking with wet pull ups talk to him about getting up and using the bathroom if he feels like he has to go. Some kids are such deep sleepers that they need the pull ups for lots longer.

My ds 4 1/2 is almost potty trained. He is wearing underwear all day and does wear pull ups at night. He stays dry for 2 weeks or so than wets.He also wakes ME up in the middle of the night to go the bathroom. I really don't mind but he still does go sometimes during the night in the pull up. My Dr said wait until he is dry for 1 month, we get sooooo close!!! Oh well don't want to force the issue with him he won't do it forever right?? lol

As soon as my ds was potty trained at 2 1/2 I put underwear on him at night however in the beginning I put a pull up on over the underwear. This way he would feel if he had an accident but the bed would be protected. He had a couple of accidents and immeaditatly woke up and I changed him. After a couple of dry weeks we took the pull ups away all together.

My little girl is almost 3 1/2 and we just started with no pull-ups at night. We have a water prof pad we lay in her bed at night. She has had a few accidents but she wakes up in the middle of the night for a drink of water. I have her get up and go potty but then she is ready to get into my bed! We go to DL in Oct. and I want her to be out of pull-ups for the trip. She has been potty trained since she was three. :wizard:

My oldest DD had to wear pullups until she was 7. She has been completely potty-trained at 21 months so this was alarming to me. I took her to an appointment with her allergist when she was 5 and they asked if she was bedwetting. I told them that she was and they sent her for xrays of her neck/head and we found out that she has enlarged adnoids which make her have sleep apnea during the night, causing her to wet the bed. They said that we could stop the bedwetting by getting her adnoids taken out. I didn't think that having surgery was the best route, so we dealt with the bedwetting. It has actually gotten alot better and she hasn't wet the bed for a little over a month.

DD9 at 2 and DD5 just got off pull-ups at night. At 3 we took her to her pediatrician because we thought their was a problem because she was potty trained by 2. We were concerned because no matter what we did (no drinks a few hrs before bedtime, wake her up in the middle of night etc...) she would still wake up wet. Her pediatrician said she is such a deep sleeper that she doesn't realize whats happening. She did say if by 6 she still wet the bed then we should be concerned.

I always say all kids are different, what is good for one might not be good for the other.

Ig he's waking up dry I would go ahead and stop using them. Also, does he wake himself up in the middle of the night to go? We stopped with DS when he was about 3 and DD was about 3-1/2.

My kids were both five.

My peditrician said don't worry about it until at least six. She wasn't real big on pushing it - if they aren't ready it doesn't seem to do any good and can be shameful (and uncomfortable and rash causing and no one gets enough sleep).

As a long time bed wetter (I was twelve when I finally stopped) I wish there had been nighttime pull ups when I was a kid. We tried everything available back then when I was little and it was such a traumatic experience.

The first six kids were all night time trained by 3. However, ds (5) is still wearing good nites to bed. I've tried the limiting drinks etc. but he still woke up wet. THis is less hassle for him and for us and pediatrician said don't worry with a boy until 6 or 7. After having seven kids I'm pretty relaxed and don't stress over too much - he'll be dry as soon as he can physically be dry.

I may be jixing myself and DS by saying this, but he's "just" stopped wetting the bed and he's 6 1/2. He had 2 accidents in WDW, and 2 right after we got home. But he's been dry for almost a month!!!! :cool1: His dr. said not to worry until he was at least 7 or 8, especially since DH was a bed wetter until 11 or 12. DS was a late potty trainer, too. 3 1/2 with #1, and 4 1/2 with #2, but we had a LOT of set backs due to surgery he had at age 3. I however, didn't use pullups once he figured out the #2 thing. I couldn't deal with any regression after we finally got rid of them. I put a plastic cover on his bed, and changed the sheets everyday. I'm still anticipating the occasionaly accident, but I'm soooo happy he's gotten to this point!

DD3 is still wearing pullups at night. She's not dry in the moring yet, and is still having accidents during the day, so again, no rush here.
