DD17 walked at 11.5 mos; DD13 walked at 12 mos; DS9 walked at 9 mos (actually, he started running, never did "walk"); DD7 didn't walk until 15 months- has hearing loss and vertigo problems, and that may have contributed, but even she was within normal range. Typical age for walking is between 12-15 months.
In general, "research shows".....girls walk before boys and lighter babies walk before heavier babies. Babies' "start to walk" stage Ranges from 8 months to 15 or 16 months. It is a developmental stage, and has to do with fat to muscle ratio- not really "learned". "Practice" can help build muscles, but it won't really teach a baby to walk. Kids also develop differently- some kids develop more fine motor before gross motor, although most go gross to fine. Some kids work on speech before motor....just depends on your child's personality.
Don't worry- kids in general do what they want to do when they want to do it. As long as your baby is within the normal range, then he is normal! Only significant "worry" is when a child is behind in several areas. But, as parents we compare and compete, sometimes unconsciously. Finally, believe me, there will come a day when you will ask yourself (as you are chasing)- WHY did I want him to walk so SOON!
