When did you start teaching your child to drink from a cup?

i introduced the sippy cup at 7 months and my DS (22 months) is beginning to master drinking out of a regular cup (although I only let him have water at this point - he tends to throw things when he is finished :sad2: )

exactly what my son 23 months does lol he can drink okish out of a cup but sometimes he will just tip it over himself :rotfl: the rascal...i gave my boy a sippy cup bout 8 or 9 months ontp a nuby cup which he stil using same brand now

We introduced the sippy cup around 6-7 months, and it took us awhile before we found one that worked for DS. The Nuby ones were eventually the ones that worked. We had quite the collection of sippy cups! DS was off of the bottle by the time he turned one, which we were happy about. We then switched to the straw cups. Again, the Nuby ones were the best for us.

We wanted to switch to a more "big kid" straw cup, and we found the Gerber Graduate cups. I love them! DS is 2, and we are working on a regular cup with a lid (like a travel coffee cup). We (along with daycare) are also working with him on drinking from small dixie cups. Like a PP, we only put water in the dixie cups. DS tends to play in the water, and will sometimes dump the water on the floor. He is getting better with the dixie cup. We hope to be able to have him on the regular cup with the lid soon. DS has learned to multi-task with the straw cup! He walks around with the cup hanging out of his mouth by the straw.

Good luck!

We use real cups in the house and sippy cups out. My DD used a open cup at 6 months. I gave her a little bit at a time. She was well trained with it by 8 months. Sippy cups on the other hand took longer for her . I had to but new ones with removible non spill spouts because they are easier to train on. I used advent cups but you cann't take the seal out with out major leakage.

We introduced them around 7-8 mo. We found it was easier for them to figure out how to suck on a sippy if they knew how to suck on a straw first. Otherwise they just got frustrated with the sippy.
I've also heard about the speach problems with using a sippy, but I think it only affects them if the child is already pre-dispositioned to having a speach problem(ie if a family member also had a speach delay, ect.) All my kids used the same sippy cups and the first didn't have any speach issues and was an early talker, my second still has a speach impairment at 6yo, and my youngest falls somewhere inbetween. My younger sister had a speach impairment when she was a kid too, so that must be where DS6 inherrited it from. Anyhow, I don't think it would hurt if you wanted to give it a try now.

I have a preemie and he was totally on sippy cups by 1 year. My Dr congratulates me on this! He didn't ever have a problem switching. HE used to "hold" his bottle from about 7 months so the switch wasn't hard on him for holding the sippy cup (harder on Grandma who LOVES feeding him!)

I also used the Nubby cups first. Also I taught him the straw technique the same way as the PP. I am happy he learned the straw but the straw cups are SO hard to CLEAN. I feel they are always dirty. Now we use the Playtex older kids sippys that have more of an edge to them. It's really helping him to get used to the edge of a cup and a lot of times he does take little drinks from our regular cups.

We started DD on a sippy when she was six months old. I tried a lot of cups!

At first she would only bite on the spout...she didn't know to suck the liquid out. So I found the best thing to use were the Take N Toss disposable cups. She didn't have to use very much effort to get the liquid out. Beware, they are MESSY but they're very effective for teaching the sippy cup concept.

Once she got the hang of it, she could use any sippy cup. But I got soooo tired of taking apart all the valves, collars, cups, spouts, etc. So I looked online and found these cups:

We LOVE them and I'm in the process of tossing all of her other ones, just going to use these exclusively. They're great because they only have two parts - the cup and the lid, don't leak, and they're BPA-free!

Both my kids started learning to drink from sippy cups by late 5months to 6months old and were done with any bottles (i breastfed for 6 months too) by 7 months. I just used hard top First Years, I think . You might want to look into BPA-free(that bad plastic) cups. It took a only a few tries for DS to get it. DD was slightly resistant. I think i may have gotten a few soft top cups to get her comfortable.

My kids got plenty of cuddles and I actually held them for their formula/cup time if they weren't eating a meal in the high chair. I also read with them every night from a few months old --to present so they didn't miss out on that loving time of being held and cuddled as part of our daily routine.

I started my dd now 2.5 on an open cup at 4 months. Obviously mastering the technique was slow but it just got her use to it. She was off the bottle at 10 months and I did use sippy cups. She learnt to use a straw in there somewhere but I cannot remember exactly when. I do remember that it was at Starbucks though on a latte.
She could handle an open cup without spilling at 17 months.
All children are different but the longer you leave it the more difficult it is.
