When did you feel like an adult?

I'm 26. Many of my friends are married, or have kids, some even both. One even bought a house.

It blows my mind because even though I have a job, pay bills, make my own dr's appointments, do my own cooking and grocery shopping, etc. I don't know if I really feel like an adult yet. I still feel like a kid forced to go to work and do all these things. Am I alone?

Just curious- at what age did you really feel like an adult?

I'm in my late 20s and I still don't. Maybe it's because I'm not married and don't have kids yet? Or maybe it's because there is no real "adult feeling" that we're supposed to feel? :confused3

That's a fascinating question, Lulu. I first felt like an adult when I was 24. I was dating a man several years older than myself and his ex-partner was wary about meeting me. The fact that my romantic relationship would be a delicate issue for someone in their 40's really drove home my adulthood.

I hit forty-one this year. Still no signs of adulthood on the horizon.

I'm 30...sometimes I wonder if I'll ever feel like an adult...I feel old for sure, but an adult??

When I brought my daughter home from the hospital - all of the sudden it hit me that I was responsible for another human being - quite the sobering thought. I was 24 at the time.

When I signed for my first car and then signed the mortgage. That brought it home that I was an adult.

Last night actually. I had gone to a wedding and instead of sharing a room with someone or crashing in a room with family, I had a hotel room all to myself. In all my years, that was the first time I spent the night in a hotel room alone. And I felt like such an adult doing that. It was kinda odd.

27, when my mother got sick and I had to put her care and needs before my own. It was very enlightening.

36 year old, wife and mother here. Hoping I never turn into an adult !!!!!!!!

I just turned 49 a couple weeks ago :scared1: But it wasn't until I lost both my Dad 1999, and then my Mom 2004, that I really felt like an adult.

Let's see....I've been married 19 years, 2 kids (17 & 14), a mortgage, car payment, taxes and a silly dog and yet......no adult-hood in sight!

Really, I guess it depends on what you mean by adult. I know I need to do certain things (work, pay bills), but my GF and I still look at each other sometimes and are like "When did we become the grown-ups?" "How did we get here?". We still feel inside like we're 16-20-ish and yet...here we are with kids, payments etc....

The one thing that does get me is my DS is going to be a senior in HS next year. I just can't comprehend that! I mean, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :rotfl:

As soon as I moved out on my own (at 18), I felt like an adult. I am still a kid at heart, but I don't feel like a kid forced to do adult stuff.

I felt like an adult the day my mother handed me her antique platter (that had held countless turkeys, hams, etc over the years) and told me I was in charge of holiday meals.

I'm 40, married, mother, mortgage holder, car loan holder, job on Wall Street. It wasn't until I became my DD's girl scout leader this year that I actually felt grown up. It wasn't just my kid I was messing up, it was other people's. :rotfl:
On a serious note, one of the little girls is type 1 diabetic and I realized that I had to be completely aware of what was going on with her. I couldn't just wing it.

I didn't feel like an adult until I had my first baby.

I think I truly felt like an "adult" when my 1st DS was born and I had a life that was fully dependent on me. I was 26. :)

That DS is now 26 and nowhere near that!! :teeth: He lives on his own, pays his bills, etc but he hangs out here a lot and still goofs around with his younger brothers and acts like a kid half the time.
