When did they change the vault?

They were commenting about how Svetlana was disgusted at the silver 4 years ago, but was happy to get the bronze last night.

What a difference 4 years makes, huh?

Amazing pretty much sums it up. Wow. We should all be so determined. :)

I understand the difference in reactions. She got silver in Sydney, having to use a vault score that was really unfair. The vault was not set at the right legal height. She could have had a better score.

Last night, they did their best, and won bronze, fair and square. There is something to be said for knowing you earned something versus not being allowed to try and earn something n an even playing field.

Does that make sense? :D

I ran across an article on MSN talking about the vault change and it was definitely for safety reasons. I'd post the article, but I don't want to risk navigating MSN and spoiling myself for tonight's results.

Yes it does.

I thought the judging last night was fair. Incredibly picky, yes, but equally picky for everyone. It's certainly no shame to be 16 years old and to be second best in the world at something! (I couldn't even be the second best gymnast on my BLOCK!)

The vault was changed for safety reasons when the yurchenko style vaults (gymnast does a round-off onto the springboard and lands backwards on the vault) became popular. It's the type of vault that Sang Lan did when she was injured.

No spoilers here but the men's competition should be great to watch tonight. The margin between the gold and silver medalists was the smallest ever (tied with the margin between Miller and Gutsu, a couple of Olympics ago-less than a tenth of a point).

For some reason this sticks out in my memory. I think I remember seeing it on the news.

I think I remember that too. I think she was a big fan of his or something like that. Can't remember though.
