When did teacher bashing become acceptable?

He makes 98,000 a year as a teacher, he sure as heck can afford to go on vacations every year...he puts a bunch of money into a college fund for my daughter too which is great for us!

Where the heck is that?!?!??! I've been a teacher for 21 years, and I don't make anywhere NEAR that! PLEASE let me know where he works, so I can PACK MY BAGS!!!!

Around here most of the teachers that want to work in the summer get to-teaching summer school. Many choose not to as they are already making enough to carry them over and they like only working part time and having the summers off. They just choose for their paychecks to be divided over 52 weeks, rather than only getting paid for the time they are actually teaching. My brother gets checks every 2 weeks during the summer (they have bi-weekly pay) this way he has money coming in the whole time he is hanging at the beach, golfing and vacationing in Ireland.

Umm, the money they get over the summer is money they already earned and the school district held onto, and made interest on. It may be more convenient for a teacher to have their paychecks given year round, but that is not really a benefit for the teacher.

A principal around here makes about $60K. What the heck teacher makes close to $100K?!!??!

My district pays pretty well compared to others in the area. A teacher who has worked for 26 years and has a doctorate will make about $70K, but it's very unusual for a teacher to have a doctorate. With a masters and 26 years it's about $55K, but you don't move up beyond 26 years and you actually stay in the same spot from 22 years to 26 years. You do get about a $2,000 pay increase for every 15 hours of graduate credit past a masters up to 60 hours. Of course, only private institutions around here offer grad classes that aren't part of a masters program. I paid about $200 for each hour of graduate credit.

I think principals in our district make around $100K, at least at the high school level.

Exactly. I'm thinking this is the biggest misconception that causes so much resentment. It seems like people think if we only work 190 days, then we must be getting paid for 175 days (excluding weekends) that we don't work. It is simply not true.

We just got a new Superintendent of Schools, $209,045.00. The principals are around 140,000-150,000. Teachers start at 46,000 or so...thats with no masters, they have I believe it is 4 years to complete their masters or they don't keep their jobs.

The last day of school here was Friday June 22, but I had to work on the following Monday and Tuesday (training for a new math program). So that makes it June 26th.

I started getting ready for my new class on August 6th. So that's really only a little more than 5 weeks off. Not the THREE MONTHS that everyone says I get off. I'm working in my classroom most of August, bringing my daughters in with me because I can't afford a sitter. My first paycheck will be on September 14th.

So, how many years of experience and what advanced degree do you need to be making 98,000 as a classroom teacher?

Honey, I'm in NYS too. Payscale varies on where you live. I'm in Buffalo. Extremely economically depressed area. Our principal took a job in a charter school this year b/c he would be making $60K.

I have my masters and wouldn't start in the best city school for over $30K. Just the way it is. My neighbor works in the Kenmore schools (little suburb outside of Buffalo). His salary is roughly $45K and he's been there for 25 years.

Does what you get paid as a teacher in the US depend on what you did before?

In the UK, once you're trained to be a teacher (i.e. you have QTS - Qualified Teacher Status), you're paid a wage per level. You have to meet standards each year to progress to the next level, and these involve more responsibilities. It doesn't matter whether you have just a bachelors, a masters or a doctorate, the same conditions apply. Which is a shame, because I have a masters

Seriously, though, I like our system. It judges you as a teacher, not as an academic.

ITA! I could have six masters degrees and would get paid the same!! My neighbor put in 25 yrs. and is paid roughly $45K! So, how can that guy get paid so much?

Is your brother teaching college courses as well? Teaching as an adjunct, I was paid extra by the college, not by my school.
