When did teacher bashing become acceptable?

I'm not one to bash teachers. My son has had some excellent ones. Some poor ones too, but that happens.

I think, though, that teachers invite the bashing when they act as if they have it so much rougher than people in other industries. There are a lot of people who work tremendously long hours in this world, and some of them don't get summers off with week long breaks for Christmas and Easter too.

I did not read the whole thread so excuse me if I state anything that has been said.

I am a teacher gearing up to go back tomorrow. First. let me clear up the summers off thing. YES we are not EMPLOYED over the summer. WE are not paid for it. We are paid for the amount of days we work and that is it!! Lest you think we are lounging by the pool eating bon bons in summer, I would like to clear up this little misconception. Most of us have to work at a summer job most likely just extra hours from our yearly second part time job because as I stated earlier we are not employeed so therefore not paid! When we are not working we are required to go to school to accrue the necessary professional development hours to recertify. Oh and that costs over 200.00 (not to mention what the classes cost).

I am also not saying that we have it harder than others BUT we deal in a human commodity. I can think of only one other profession that deals in this manner and it is doctors. Doctors are respected teachers are bashed.

Great post. I used to rush out the door behind the buses to drive an hour to my grad classes.

Same here. I left school at 3:05 and drove over and hour so that I could make a 5 o'clock class two nights a week. I had to have it approved by my principal because one of my classes in the last semester was only available on Mondays and we have faculty meetings every Monday.

I don't know what I'm going to do with myself this year. I finished my masters in May :cheer2: so I'm going to have all this extra time on my hands.
