Does anyone know or is there a theory about what will happen in 2042 and thereafter when the contracts start expiring? Will current owners be able to buy back in or will Disney take them back and sell them?
There is no reason current owners won't be allowed to buy whatever is on sale on February 1, 2042. However, the land leases expire on January 31, and whatever comes next is likely to be fresh contrracts and point charts.

My theory is that Disney is not worrying about 2042 at this point. I wouldn't expect them to start thinking about 2042 until 2032. The way families vacation in 2042 might be completely different then the way we vacation in 2019. Members might want larger villas based on how they travel. The percentage of owners in 2019 that will be still be owners in 2042 I would guess will be less than 25%.
Whatever Disney does in 2042 will be for the benefit of Disney and certainly not to reward long time DVC owners with cheap extensions or low-priced new contracts. And who knows, by 2042 the interest in DVC may have already peaked and Disney will be trotting out a new scheme to part us from our money.
